Well folks – another day, another venue I fall head over heels in love with. Oh Barr Mansion, you had me at your gorgeous wrap around porches. I also adore how the bridesmaid dress are just the perfect shade of lovely to match the fabulous painted ceiling. We met in October 2008 at a swing-dancing event in West Austin and David proposed there year later. I never had a clear picture of what I wanted for a wedding as far as styles go (even after creating an internet survey it still took me six months to pick colors) but I did know I wanted a wedding that was about us as a couple. What we needed: An indoor/outdoor reception venue for fickle Texas weather, a large dance floor, GOOD Vegetarian food (read: not a pasta buffet), and beautiful memories. What we wanted: Highlight David’s artistic talents, add my love of musical theater, incorporate David’s beer-making hobby, make a photo booth AND throw a really fun party!
Despite family illness, freak fires, moving into a new home and a broken hand, we succeeded in checking everything off the list. We added to David’s family history by being the 4th generation to get married at First Presbyterian in Georgetown, TX. The Barr Mansion was the loveliest reception venue. They served a real menu of vegetarian food that tasted so fantastic even my carnivorous brother was impressed. Barn version 2.0 is even more integrated into the natural than the first and someone else did all the worrying for me on the big day (thanks Rick!). David used his talents to draw and design our invites, program and thank-you cards based on a musical theater theme, which we also carried into the ceremony music. Our guests were treated to 5 different home-brews that they drank out of beer stein favors. Magan brought in James Dvorscak to coax people out of their shells for the photo booth, and best of all, the dance floor was never empty.
As for memories, I can’t stop looking at the pictures! Is it acceptable to put giant photos of yourself in every room in your house? I cannot believe how fortunate we were to snag Magan Blasig as our photographer and a big thanks to my mother for magically picking her out of the haystack of a vendor list that we started with.
