From the bride … My favourite season is winter, I love the softness and prettiness of freshly fallen snow while sitting inside by a crackling fire with a cup of hot chocolate. This feeling is what I hoped to convey with our wedding. We were married in the Canadian Rocky Mountains in January and had planned a weekend full of activities. We selected the Canadian Rocky Mountains Resorts: Buffalo Mountain Lodge, because it was the perfect combination of mountain elegance with rustic charm. There was a wood burning fireplace in the timber Wapiti room where the wedding was held, as well as in every guest room.
Before the wedding, my mom, bridesmaids and I put together welcome packages with a letter thanking our guests for coming and ingredients for them to warm up by the fire and make smores. As guests arrived at the ceremony, we had a hot chocolate and marshmallow station set up so that guests could make a cup of hot cocoa to sit with through the ceremony.
For the reception, we chose soft, textured linens, light pink and ivory flowers and lots of candlelight to add warmth to the room. It was important to us to add little details to the décor that were personalized. Strands of pearls of my mothers, which had been used on our tree at Christmas each year as I grew up, were scattered on the table top around the floral arrangements. Old tea cups and saucers, which had been collected by and used to belong to my husband’s Grandmother and her best friend, were set out on each table to hold flowers.
The snow began to fall the afternoon before the wedding and created a beautiful backdrop for our photos – as if the mountains weren’t enough! To top it all off, a friends sister is a broadcaster for the weather network and while announcing the snowy weather for Alberta, wished congratulations to us on air. While watching the video of this, a deer with only one antler stood at the door and watched through the window!
