When we started planning our wedding we knew exactly what we didn’t want, but not exactly what we wanted. Things that ranked the highest on our list of important items were fun, family, friends and food but as most newly engaged couples know, it’s hard to find the right starting point even if you can see the big picture. Finding our venue was much easier than I had expected and as soon as we chose it the whole style of the wedding fell into place. Being a corporate event planner, I thought I would go crazy with the details but it ended up being so much fun to do something so personal that the planning flew by.
Our venue was an amazing mix of old, rustic, shabby-chic style but it’s location in the heart of downtown Toronto captured our love for the city and where we had our first date, proposal and first home together. Some of our favourite parts of the day were all DIY projects or personal touches that we wanted to incorporate. Ideas I bought, borrowed and stole from SMP and other websites made everything feel like we did most of it ourselves which was the feeling I was going for, and was the truth! The amazing graphic designer at my office is also an artist and she designed our invites and a monogram for us that was too perfect for words. I had the monogram made into a stamp at a local scrap book store and used it on all the printed materials with coordinating ink colours.
From the wedding photos of our grandparents, to the handmade table runners (that I spent hours on!) to the string of postcards with fun facts about us and the candy bar with cupcakes and DIY flags and loots bags it wasn’t over the top but it was enough that everyone knew the day was all about us. Everyone pitched in on the wedding day to get the decor set-up and my awesome girlfriend even arranged all of the florals for me after we ordered them from a wholesale flower store. The definite highlight of the evening was the photo booth that Nikki and her assistance set-up in the gazebo on the patio where couples, friends and families could go and take silly shots. I was hesitant that people wouldn’t be into it but we literally had to shut it down and drag people inside for dancing and speeches.
It was a truly unforgettable day and we are so lucky it turned out to be everything we wished for with fun, family and friends. My favourite comment from a guest was something like “everything that you’ve done and everything I see I can’t actually believe it’s there, and then it’s really true and it’s amazing!” (I think he was referring to the late night poutine and grilled cheese sandwiches at this point).
