My jaw hit the desk when I saw the cake in this winter wedding shoot from A Simple Photograph and Hazlitt Vintage Rentals. The rest of the inspiration this talented group put together is equally as fetching and would make a killer vintage-inspired wedding. There’s nothing like scotch and a steamy kiss to warm up those winter nights! I just want to hunker down and live inside this winter wonderland forever. There are so many more romantic and ravishing images in the full gallery!

It all started with the idea of a bed in a barren field! We wanted to create a scene that was dark and brooding and dripping with romance. We wanted the images to look chilly but steaming with heat from our couple. A romance that warms you up like a hot cup of tea on a cold day. The elements would include birch logs, books, luggage, nests, twigs and feathers. The colours were to all be muted focusing on grey, navy and off white. The couple was to be madly in love and have a vintage, bohemian style.
Hazlitt Vintage Rentals set the stage for our scene. Selena chose the location, a farm with a century old log cabin near Benmiller Ontario and designed our theme. She sourced and painted an old metal bed frame, gun metal grey, and set it up in the field beside the cabin. She carefully selected the bedding and props to have a masculine look including scotch and cigars on the bedside table which was a black vintage trunk. She also set up little vignettes around the property. A few chairs here, an animal skin there. It was breath taking. I fell in love with this old black bicycle, casually staged with a woolen blanket, some dog wood twigs and a bottle of wine.
Ida from Sweet Sweets prepared a dessert table, and let me tell you, your jaw is about to hit the floor when you see her cake and mini cakes! The large center piece cake, was designed with the inspiration of a nest in a birch tree. The detail was just impeccable, right down to the lovebirds names carved in the branches. The mini cakes were each a piece of birch log with a small bird perched on top. The detail on these little birds was amazing each feather was hand carved!! Ida’s other specialty, cubed cupcakes (these are to die for!), were individually wrapped to match the stationery and displayed on a white washed sled.
Laura K Design provided the beautiful stationery. She designed a nest and feather graphic for the invite and RSVP card and continued another theme by creating a save the date card that was actually a luggage tag! Printed in two shades of blue, they were stunning. She also designed simple and elegant escort cards that Selena displayed on a bulletin board that was wrapped in fabric and strung with twine.
Luann’s Country Flowers provided a few floral arrangements to fill out our decor. She chose a simple colour pallet of off white and beige, and included real eggs and birch bark in the arrangements. The containers themselves were provided by Hazlitt Vintage Rentals.
Cabaret Vintage Toronto styled our models, Katie and Eric. Cabaret is a vintage clothing company that has been known to style a wedding or two in their day! Most of what they carry in their shop is authentic vintage clothing, but they also have designed a wedding line that is modern but vintage inspired (http://www.cabaretvintage.com/category/bridal-the-cabaret-collection-wedding-dresses/) . Tao provided Katie with elements of both old and new! She wore three bridal looks though out the shoot. The first was “The Baby Doll”. A vintage inspired gown that Tao paired with a black velvet cape circa 1960. The second was a beaded shift dress, which I believe was also a 1960’s gown. This was paired with a vintage mink and finally katie wore the dress she sported at her own wedding to Eric earlier this year, “The Soiree”. This is also a vintage inspired dress that Tao paired with yet another mink. Katie was gorgeous! Eric’s look was masculine rugged and bohemian. I just love his sweater/jacket. He was so stylish and handsome, and such a great sport to spend his day with all of us ladies! Both Eric and Katie wore accessories from Pomp and Plumage. You’ll notice that Katie’s hair accessories and Eric’s boutonnières change in almost every shot! Denise of Pomp and Plumage designed all of the veils, hair pieces, bouquets, boutonnières, and accessories. If you haven’t seen Pomp and Plumages design’s yet, you MUST go look at what Denise can create! Her work is breathtaking and completely original. Sonia Ryan was the expert on hand to keep Katie looking perfect all day! She expertly did Katie’s make-up for the shoot. The look was dark and smokey. In a word: Sexy. Sonia is a expert at doing make-up for photo shoots. I have had the great pleasure of working with her a number of times and she knows exactly how to apply make up to photograph flawlessly and yet still look beautiful up close and in person!
When I arrived to photograph this scene, I was immediately blown away by the artistry of all of these vendors. I was amazed at how each of their individual pieces pulled together to create this breath taking image. There is not a typical wedding vendor in this group. They are all plain and simply, brilliant. Their work is sculpture and design using the most unique elements and mediums. I felt like I was photographing for a gallery and yet each element is so uniquely beautiful and accessible and perfect for a wedding! I couldn’t be happier with the result!
