Even though most of our weddings happen stateside, SMP actually has a pretty big Australian following. So when we spotted this perfect Aussie affair, we knew we had to put it up. We really wanted to get out of the city (Sydney) for our wedding weekend and as we often holiday and camp in the south coast area we decided it would be the perfect place for a wedding getaway for us and our friends and family. We also thought it would be a lovely Australian experience for our overseas guests (Tim is from the UK). As soon as we arrived at Terrara House we fell in love, it was the perfect “country garden” style venue we were after. Gorgeous gardens and a relaxed atmosphere, which needed very little extra in terms of adornments. It also happened to fit (just!) within our very strict budget!
We were married under an enormous Moreton Bay Fig tree, which became a sort of motif for the day. In fact, in addition to designing and making my wedding dress, two bridesmaids dresses and all of our headpieces, my mother also cooked and jarred 90 jars of fig conserve for guests to take home. They were wrapped in vintage floral handkerchiefs, one of the many DIY elements of the day. Being a graphic designer, I had a hand in almost every detail… from the invites, to the menus, to the conserve labels. It was the hardest I’ve worked in my life!
On the subject of the dress, my Mum is a certified genius. She constructed the everything bodice from scratch, hand embroidering and appliqueing every detail. I feel so grateful that she came out of retirement to create the gown of my dreams. Suffice to say she is my absolute hero!
Guests drank raspberry daiquiris and ate from shared platters placed in the centre of each table. It was so important to me that the food was amazing and I was not disappointed. It’s one of the first things people commented on after the wedding. Well, that and the daiquiris! They were quite a hit on a hot Australian Summers day!
