Ice Cream Parlors, architectural beauties, and the prettiest color of mint. Can you think of a better combination? The concept for this design was based on a private couples table for the bride and groom. It gives the newly married couple a few moments to catch their breath, sip some champagne, and enjoy a moment before they go into their reception and mingle with guests and dance the night away. I wanted it to be slightly dramatic and romantic. Something to remember when the evening goes so fast!
One of the elements I wanted to pick up from the board was the polka dots and stripes. I love the graphic quality of them against the softer, almost pastel color background. Most of the designs for this table revolve around the dot (or circle) theme. I thought the empty fountain was the perfect place for our large white polka dots. The table linens, flower orbs with dots, and tableware all echo this idea. Stripes were brought in on the china and ribbons—and bows throughout, beginning with the gorgeous bridal gown to the groom’s bowtie, and the table napkins folded over the plates. Amy at Amo Ink designed the fabulous stationery and table numbers to echo these shapes and the overall black and white graphic feel.
The flowers used were simple—carnations and pom-poms for the flower orbs, and hydrangea and roses for the large centerpiece. The hypericum berries added that little touch of red. Sometimes there is beauty in simplicity, and all of these flowers add a great textural element to the design by being massed together. The bouquet is comprised of some classic bridal flowers, stephanotis, roses, and peonies. In addition to those, anemones bring in a fun black and white element and work with the striped ribbon.
A note from Amo ink—As a former architect, I always love bringing in a sense of place to my stationery designs. When a couple is getting married at an architecturally significant location, I am always urging them to include some detail that reflects the space. Not only does it give guests a sense of what is to come, but it creates a sort of literal framework for the whole event. Union Terminal has always been my favorite building in Cincinnati, and I was so excited to create a piece that showcases its magnificent dome. I drew over a photo of the actual building in Adobe Illustrator to create the die-cut for the top of the invitation. I used the window layout to create a striping pattern we were incorporating directly from the inspiration board, and carried a bolder version of those stripes to the envelope liner. Also, I added the detail of the clock, which is a major focal point of the building. I felt this was also a great way to bring the circle motif into the printed pieces. The save the date included a photo of the façade filtered to look like a vintage postcard. The menus also reflect the shape of the dome. The escort cards doubled as a favor with a delicious lollipop holding the printed piece, again reflecting the black and white, stripes, and circle themes we developed from the inspiration board.
A note from the photographer, Jacalyn: My vision for the photography portion of this project really stemmed from a fashion forward line of thinking. I wanted it to be bright, color popping, and eye catching! Also, I feel that a wedding is an absolute wonderful excuse to have a magazine style fashion shoot…..I mean everyone is looking their best and all dolled up, why not? That was the thought process I had when executing the photography documenting the collaboration of our artistic minds!
