From Inspiration to Reality: The Design, III

I am so thrilled that one of our readers, Kate, designed a board that could inspire such loveliness. This shoot is the perfect example of how to use an inspiration board to translate an entire wedding. It’s about designing a feeling, a vibe. It’s finding beauty in the details and bringing them to life through decor, through flowers, through fashion and style. And Millie Holloman, together with Jennifer at Salt Harbor Designs, did just that.

Rather than doing a summary at the end of the day, describing how you can apply this same style to your own wedding, I thought I’d sprinkle in a few ideas throughout the day. Starting with using old furniture as accents. It’s the idea of bringing the warmth and charm of a home into your wedding decor. You can find old pieces at flea markets, at garage sales, maybe even in your parents basement. Distressing the furniture with paint is an easy way to get that shabby chic look on a next to nothing budget. Whether you have your reception indoors or out, bringing in old furniture to act as display tables for desserts, cakes, old photos, flowers…is a genius way to get a lot of bang for your buck.

And in lieu of a guestbook, from Millie and Jennifer…

For the guest book, we decided to employ a different use of the word letter. We used an old PO Box unit and set up a station where guests might write the couple short letters and tuck them into envelopes for the couple to read later. We printed custom pre-addressed envelopes and added vintage stamps. Brent Holloman Design made us wonderful 3-D paper letters that spelled out “Just Married,” which were positioned within the mail boxes.

The AMAZING flowers that are pinned to the back of the guest chairs were done by The Paper Doll and were pinned to letterpressed place cards that Jennifer at Salt Harbor designed. And when I say “it’s all in the details,” it’s precisely these beauties that I am referring to. When interpreting ideas tucked inside this shoot, look to the details. The abundance of small touches that bring the entire story to life, that give the wedding style a personality of its own.
