Black and White Photography by Andreas, IV

The thing about the photographs that Andreas captures is this...they are so alive, so full of emotion, of depth, of unabashed gorgeousness. They are perfect enough to hang on your walls, but soulful enough to bring you  to tears each time you look at them.

What do you love about black and white photography?

When a girl is planning her wedding day, she thinks about themes, colour schemes for florals, invitations and so on - I don't think that anyone says "hey that would look great in black and white!" Yet, black and white photography really works perfectly with weddings because it strips away all of that visual noise.  You could have a great moment captured, say between a bride and her mother in an embrace among their guests, but in color it doesn't really wow the viewers because of distracting color elements in the background. Once that image is produced as  a black and white though, the viewer can focus on the emotion and composition clearly. I do incorporate color; it's important, however the black and white format works well for preserving the memories and emotions, in fact I think it heightens it for the viewer.  I shoot about 80% of the day in black and white. I don't use any flash, and I shoot at a very high ISO so I can work with the available light.  These technical factors are what make my work look the way it does.
