Vintage Hometown Winter Wedding

Every couple wants to make their Big Day unique, but this Bethlehem beauty personalized the details in ways you wouldn’t believe. From a display of vintage family wedding gowns, to a stunning Moravian Stars installation as a nod to her hometown, the design moments are (almost) as beautiful as the love itself. Lauren Fair photographed the whole shebang, and you can see for yourself right here.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/88111857 600 338]

From the Bride… Our day was truly detailed, personal, and special – I wanted everything to feel like it was truly ‘us’ and also showcased all the things that I love in my everyday life. I’m super sentimental, love all things vintage, have a soft spot for family heirlooms, and am absolutely in love with my historic hometown.

I also wanted to honor the women in my family who have been amazing examples of love and commitment in their marriages. Finally, while I didn’t want to have a large bridal party (I was in a sorority and have the most amazing sisters who I am lucky enough to have in my everyday life almost a decade later), I still definitely wanted to include them as a special and meaningful part of our day.

The three most unique and standout details were my family-heirloom brooch bouquet (that we made just 4 days before the wedding!), the display of my mom and Aunt’s actual wedding dresses, and the Moravian Star light installation I designed as the centerpiece of the reception décor. More details on those below.

Our ceremony décor was simple so as not to take away from the historic quality of the chapel, which was built 1751. I walked down the aisle to a live sung version of “Hey Pretty Girl” by Kip Moore, because we love country music, not Cannon in D. My dad is from Brazil so we also included a certificate signing during our ceremony, as is custom there (the Bride and Groom actually sign their marriage certificate in Brazil during the ceremony with a witness).

The reception was a all-neutral, sparkly, vintage dream scattered with homespun, personal touches. Mis-matched china on English linen and lace runners were the foundation to our tables. Milk glass vases served as the base for our centerpieces with scattered mercury glass votives. Our menus were hand stamped on doilies. Dinner was served family style on vintage china serving platters. I also was sure to incorporate things my husband loves too during our reception. Our cocktail hour space was turned over during dinner to be a bourbon and cigar bar with large lounge chairs and sofas as well as a custom designed Edison bulb light overhead.

Once things got underway with our ‘Best Day Ever’ – it was a whirlwind, as expected. But each time I saw a little detail I had made or planned for, I knew it had all come together to create a Christmas City winter affair that was truly representative of all the things and people that are special to us.

For our colors – everything was neutral: blush, gray, cream, white, sparkly/mercury glass. The bridesmaid dresses were beaded gowns, the sign carrying girls wore sparkle knit dresses, and I switched out of my bolero into a beaded belt for the reception. The girls all had vintage fur stoles, purchased over the years at an annual sale held locally. The groom and groomsmen all wore gray. The only ‘color’ you’ll see is the blue for my shoes, purse, and some of the details on the groom’s suit and his socks to match my sapphire engagement ring and custom designed wedding band. Sapphire is both my husband and step-son’s birthstone, which is why they picked that for my engagement ring!

Bouquet

My brooch bouquet was made from a collection of pins and buttons that were collected from my Aunts, Great Aunts, mom, and grandmother as well as from my groom’s mom, grandmother, and great grandmother. Our family best friend took on the task of collecting them and each was sent with its own story of whom it belonged to and where it came from. It glittered as I walked down the aisle in the candle-lit chapel and continues to sparkle today, on display in our home. It turned out more amazing and special then I ever dreamed – and it’s something that I am able to treasure for years to come as an remarkable collection of compiled family heirlooms that were rarely seen or used (not many people wear pins these days, sadly).

Wedding Dresses

My mom is from a PA farming family of seven – two girls and five boys. Almost all of my Aunt’s still had their wedding dresses and allowed me the honor of displaying them on vintage dress forms at our reception. My oldest Aunt was married in 1951 (we also used her wedding Bible at our ceremony) in a plain Mennonite ceremony. She made her tea-length dress of white satin, including the traditional Mennonite ‘plain dress bib’ that was worn over the dress to show modesty. The other dresses ranged from a beaded taffeta dress with a train to simple satin A-line dress with applique flowers. We also included their actual wedding photos to show what they dresses looked like on their actual wedding day debut. Overall, it was one of the best aspects of our reception décor. My Aunt’s felt honored and like they were a part of the day and they loved that their dresses got another day to shine!

Moravian Stars

Bethlehem, PA is known as Christmas City, USA (we have a hashtag, #christmascityusa, even). I specifically wanted to get married when the town was spruced up for Christmas. During that time, the downtown area is decked in lights with Christmas carols playing full time from speakers. In addition, a time honored tradition (year round really) is to display Moravian Stars as porch lights or even chandeliers. The historic Moravian Chapel, where we were married, installs a large Moravian Star during the holidays at the center of the altar area. It was a simple, but perfect backdrop to our ceremony. I knew that I wanted to include the iconic Moravian Star as part of our reception décor. I searched high and low and found a local shop on Main Street who was willing to ‘rent’ me 50 Moravian Stars for our light installation. I drew out how I wanted it to look and had a stellar team from Sparks Entertainment do the install. It was sparkly, magical, and such a great tie to my hometown love. It was even listed as the #1 picture on Buzzfeed as part of the 12 Best Instagram’s from the Little Town of Bethlehem, PA

Wedding Programs

Also, I made all of the wedding programs that were super fun and spirited – not just your normal run down of what happens in sequence. I also included three addition side-pocket extras: A card detailing who everyone in the wedding party was and a fun fact about them; our thank you note to friends and family; and a vintage hankie for happy tears. I spent about two years collecting over 130 hankies and each one was different – just another keepsake for our guests to remember our best day ever.

Special People Involved

I think something that wedding blogs sometimes tend to miss is that – especially for those of us who aren’t getting married straight out of college – some significant others may have been married before. In my case, my now-husband has an 11 year-old son from his first marriage who was the best man in our wedding. For being 11, he gave the best speech ever at the reception and it’s something that was so special to us (you can hear it in the film). He wrote it himself and didn’t practice with us beforehand so we had no idea what to expect – it was witty, sweet, and honest. His speech and my ‘first dance’ with the best man/now step-son are special memories that we will treasure as a family.

The bridesmaids were all friends from growing up, originally from Bethlehem, PA. But as a way to incorporate the 10 sorority sisters, I had a ‘flash-mob style reading’ of sorts. Each sister read one verse from where she was sitting in the chapel of First Corinthians 13. She simply stood up from her spot, read her verse, and then it moved on to the next reader. While a typical wedding reading, it is more special to us because it’s also part of our sorority’s founding tenants.

Elegant Tented Lake Wedding

Just like the stunning Bride, having grown up on a lake during my childhood summers, this wedding from Jessica Hendrix is tugging at my heartstrings. I can almost smell the fresh country air and feel the breeze flowing through the Sperry Tent. With Main Street Fine Catering behind the exceptional catering and unbelievable cake, I’m betting this little shindig will wow you after just one peek.

From the beautiful Bride… We knew right away that we wanted to be married on my parents estate where I had grown up and where, my now husband and I, live very close to. We wanted this day to be very special and elegant, but comfortable. I was very clear from the start as to the look and feel I was going for; elegant country. I can honestly say I would not have changed one vendor or one detail.

For our wedding, all of our vendors were incredible. We decided to have a Sperry Tent to hold the reception—what a beautiful, grand tent! The ceremony was in the garden in front of the 5 acre lake which was set a golden glow as the sun sat in fall late afternoon sky. Kim Haggerty of the Pod Shop in New Hope, PA did such an incredible job capturing the elegant, but organic arrangements which contained French country roses, fruit and willow branches. She saw my ideas through perfectly and also made wonderful suggestions which we included. We chose peaches, greens and some deeper purples for our flower colors. The property and tables were set a twinkle with tons of candles and votives as well. Main Street Catering also was hands down the best decision for our celebration. Christopher and I love local, clean, seasonal food with an Asian flare—they offered such delicious, beautiful food—it was really quite overwhelming. Their service staff and on site coordinator were professional, fun and very accommodating. They took care of everything from the rentals, the bar, and of course, the food.

We chose a 7 piece band for the reception, a jazz trio for cocktails and an acoustic guitar for the ceremony. Franklin and Alison Orchestra provided all music equipment, musicians, and set up. From our engagement to our wedding, Jessica Hendrix took the most wonderful photographs. She captured so many wonderful moments with such a talented eye for composition and content. Our photographs were given to us in a very timely manner and we used her to make prints, which were gorgeous quality.

Some of the other vendors with smaller roles, but no less important, nor impressive were: Bijiou Bridal on the Main Line for my wedding dress and my maid of honors dress, The Paper Unicorn in Doylestown PA for beautifully printed announcements, invitations, and table numbers and cards, Craig of AKA Salon in New Hope for hair and makeup, Phillips Fine Wines for alcohol, and we used Mercer Museum tiles, in Doylestown, for our guest favors—small handmade ceramic acorns.

All in all it was, truly, the best day of our lives. My husband and I feel so blessed to have such amazing, loving friends and family to celebrate this day with us. Every single person involved in this day made it special. We had so much fun. We danced, ate, drank and started this new chapter of our lives together with such gusto! I feel so lucky to wake up everyday next to my husband who I just adore, with memories of a wedding I just adored.

Winter to Spring Wedding Inspiration

Behind every fabulous inspiration session is a wonderful team of vendors and a crazy gorgeous theme. And this piece of wedding bliss has those two ingredients in spades.  It’s a winter turns to spring masterpiece with yummy treats from Cake Stand Bakery, fab paper goods from Liz Kelly Designs and all kinds of pretty from A Garden Party.  See every moment captured by Rachel Pearlman in the full gallery.

From A Garden Party… This shoot that captures a transitional winter to spring wedding. Our ultimate goal when coordinating this shoot was to create something that was vibrant, fresh and colorful, while still paying homage to the romanticism of a winter wedding. We used transitional florals, floral bulbs, elements of ice and sugar crystal, and shades of blue and green to create a wintery spring wonderland. Pops of burgundy, magenta and yellow hinted at the warm weather to come. We wanted the shoot to express the excitement of the first beginnings of spring, when flowers emerge from the frozen ground and greenery begins to replace what has died in winter.

The venue was a private residence, and had a rustic, traditional feel already that helped us style the decor. The bride (Miss PA 2011) wore a blue Ombre gown from Theia. Our bridesmaid wore a Caroline Deane green and lace gown. Each lady wore floral crowns comprised of garden roses, muscari, tweedia, jasmine vine, thistle, and begonia foliage. No detail was spared in creating the ceremony and reception decor; an ice blue linen was the perfect backdrop for rustic logs with spring flowers spilling out of them. Clay flower pots were decoupaged with floral printed fabric and held spring flowering bulbs. Hints of bulbs, just beginning to burst with growth were seen in the centerpieces, bouquets, and on the dessert table. Sugared pears served as a pretty little favor and the perfect vessel to pin place cards too. An ice bucket with fresh florals frozen inside made a stunning statement next to delicate glasses with floral ice cubes. Even the chandelier was adorned with hanging smilax vine. The bridal bouquet featured a primrose as the focal point and begonia leaves accented the bridesmaid bouquet. Hand painted cakes in green and blue and paper goods in washed blues tied together the themes of winter and spring.

The season in between winter and spring can be just as beautiful for a wedding as summer or fall- and this styled shoot is proof of that! This dream team of Rachel Pearlman Photography, A Garden Party Florist, Your Day Your Way ” Traveling Hair and Makeup Artistry”, Cake Stand Bakery and Liz Kelly Designs came together to bring a romantic, fresh and colorful take on the transitional wedding! From a stunning blue ombre gown by THEIA worn by our bride, to a 1920s inspired bridesmaid gown by Catherine Deane and sweet floral headpieces, this wedding inspiration is sure to make you reconsider getting married in ideal temperatures.

Glamorous New Year’s Eve Wedding in Philly

What better way to ring in the New Year than with wedding in Old City? This couple chose (in great taste, we think) to host their party in the posh Hotel Monaco surrounded by metallic accents and cuddled in lavish furs for an event that looks as fun as the bride’s reception dress. Keep scrolling for some beautiful images by Asya Photography. Feeling the love? Then make sure you check out the full gallery here.

From the Bride… Chris and I met at the University of Delaware senior year, even though we were from the same town! He went to Radnor and I went to the Academy of Notre Dame. I was instantly attracted to his charm and ability to make me laugh (he is pretty easy on the eyes too! :) ). We both found our way back home after college where we casually dated on and off until we took ourselves a bit more seriously around the age of 25. I moved in with him and his fuzzy/snuggly golden retriever into their charming condo in Conshohocken where we have spent the last four years together.

Chris totally surprised me with the proposal. I was off on a work trip to Chicago, I am the accessories buyer for BHLDN (Anthropologie wedding) and I was in town with a jewelry designer who was throwing a trunk show as a holiday shopping event. What I didn’t know is that my best friends from the office in Philadelphia, as well as the store staff in Chicago, helped coordinate the surprise of my life! I went to the event and was preparing to meet some of the team for dinner afterwards at a cute little restaurant called GT Fish & Oyster a few blocks from my hotel. I checked in with the hostess, who led me to the table and Chris was sitting there all dressed up by himself with a huge grin on his face. I was extremely caught off guard…I usually know EVERYTHING (really, the girls in the office call me Nancy Drew) and wasn’t sure what was going on… A bit shocked you could say, so surprised! As I walked up to him, he got down on one knee and proposed to me. It was very emotional, yet we still managed to laugh the entire time as well. It will always been one of my favorite memories.

I feel lucky enough to work for such an amazing brand as BHLDN because it taught me that your wedding day should really be reflective of you and your fiancé and that it is a day you can make your own to celebrate and cherish forever. I always dreamed of getting married on New Year’s Eve… a winter wedding on a night fit for celebration. I knew the colors would always be black & white with pops of gold and silver, perfectly festive for the holiday… A bit of preppy and chic with a mix of stripes and chevrons, vintage ribbons I found along my travels, and playful tinsel straws and party horns. We loved planning our big day and all the details.. We had the best wedding planner to pull it all together (Sara from Confetti & Co) too! We chose Old City as our venue spot because Chris really loves the historical part of the city. We wanted an older, charming church with an intimate feel and decided on Old Saint Joe’s on Willings Alley. Our reception was at the Hotel Monaco, which was a great compromise for us.. A modern, boutique hotel (for me) in the heart of Old City right next to the Liberty Bell (for him)- wedding bells and liberty bells exactly! We wanted to have fun surprises for our guests: a balloon drop at midnight as well as we a room setup next to the reception that had a photo booth with a balloon backdrop and our version of a guest book- wedding mad libs (one of the funniest/best parts of our wedding).

Elegant Wedding in Wynnewood

We love this timeless wedding – antique rings, subtle grays and greens, a fresh blanket of snow (not to mention a bold, peacock-blue to make everything else pop). No theme’s more fitting for these high school sweethearts, whose story spans years, states and life stages, their hometown ceremony and reception truly as beautiful as they are. Check out these images from Asya Photography, you can find the full gallery here.

From Asya PhotographyNickolas Bogdanovich and Julia McLaughlin first met as high school freshman at Delaware County Christian School in Newtown Square, PA in 2003. By their sophomore year, they had formed a friendship and soon started dating. After high school, Nickolas went to study at McGill University in Canada while Julia attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, but they remained friends and enjoyed returning to Philadelphia to see one another on their breaks. Unbeknownst to Julia, in March 2013 Nickolas asked her parents, James and Vivian McLaughlin, if he could ask Julia to marry him. After gasps, tears, and laughter, they said yes and Nickolas began hunting for just the right ring. He finally found a beautiful antique ring with a filigree setting that he knew Julia would love. He then set his mind to scheming up just the right surprise.

In May 2013, Nickolas told Julia that he was taking her on a surprise trip to celebrate her birthday. He drove her to Chestnut Hill and the two spent the day in search of little love notes hidden inside scallop shells that Nick had concealed around the town as part of an elaborate scavenger hunt. After they had found the last note, Nickolas suggested that they go by the Tyler Arboretum to see the gardens. There—when Julia thought all of the surprises for the day had been discovered—he proposed. Needless to say, she said yes! The pair then returned to Julia’s parents’ home to celebrate with her family, who—to her astonishment—had known of the plan all along.

Nickolas and Julia were married on January 4, 2014 at All Saints’ Church in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. It had snowed the day before so the church was covered in a stunning fresh blanket of snow. The ceremony was particularly moving to them as they made their commitment before God, their family, their friends, and their congregation. During the service, Julia’s sister and maid of honor, Laurel McLaughlin, sang Schubert’s Ave Maria and her brother and groomsman, Mark McLaughlin, played Bach’s Lute Suite No. 1 during communion. After the ceremony, the bridal party and guests made their way to the Racquet Club of Philadelphia for the reception. Many guests had braved the wintery weather, and Nickolas and Julia were so grateful that their family members and friends had traveled all the way from Canada, the Midwest, and Alabama to celebrate with them. Throughout the toasts, dances, and constant laughter, Nickolas and Julia reveled in the joy and love of the day. It was truly a precious one, and they look forward to many more of those days together.

From the Bride…  I tried on many dresses at several different shops in the area before hearing about Elizabeth Johns in Suburban Square. Elizabeth Johns is—bar none—the best wedding boutique in the area. The consultants made so much time for me and were also incredibly genuine in their desire to help me find just the right dress. When I tried on this dress, I loved the lace sleeves, the fitted-to-full shape, and the cathedral train, but I knew it was the right dress when my Mom started crying. My sister and I then started crying—and before we knew it the consultant even started crying! It was a very special moment, and I was amazed that I had found a dress more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Heather Potter from Cottage Flowers in Malvern did our flowers. She is truly a fantastic artist and captured my vision of a wintery wedding exquisitely. She met with me and my Mom several times, wanting to make sure her plans were just right (and, of course, they were gorgeous!). She also worked very closely with my Mom to help design the table settings and decorate the mantelpiece in the Racquet Club. I would recommend her to any future brides and grooms in a heartbeat.

We had CTO’s Fifth Avenue as our band and they were amazing. We requested that they play a mixture of old and new so that all of our guests could enjoy the dance floor. Fifth Avenue certainly delivered! We loved their mixture of Motown, Classics, and Top-40 songs, and our guests did too! We also appreciated that they learned the songs we wanted for our first dance and dances with our parents.

We are both pretty traditional and all along we described our vision for the day as “uniquely elegant” and “timeless”. We wanted to retain beautiful traditions but add some artistry and personal touches as well. The colors were a wintery peacock blue but we added juniper, grays, whites and greens to create a wintery look, particularly with the flowers. We also used a lot of candles (and I mean a LOT) at the reception to create a glowing, warm atmosphere. And last but not least, we loved our photographers! Especially, Asya—who even took a fall on a slippery patch of ice to get a beautiful shot of us running away from the church!

Art Deco Ballroom Wedding in Philly

You can’t go wrong incorporating an era of luxury, glamour, and most importantly, progress, into your big day. Which is why we’re so taken with this Philly couple’s amazing Art Deco wedding. Hotel Monaco provided a perfect backdrop for the modern affair with era-appropriate accents like gold sunbursts (and that dress!) laced throughout. Photographer Jennifer Sosa was there to capture the stunning event.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/80280406 600 338]

From the Bride… When Matt and I first went to see the Hotel Monaco, it was still a construction site. We squeezed past ladders and tried to visualize how the ballroom would look when it was painted, but we knew – this modern, quirky space was where we would get married. And this was before we saw the showstopper rooftop bar to be used for cocktail hour! The deco-influenced space was our jumping off point for our vision for the wedding and our vendors brought it to life better than we could ever have imagined. We tried to incorporate the deco theme in a subtle, contemporary way: sunburst patterns on our wedding cake, a letter-pressed deco design on our invitations, and the beautiful beadwork on the Jenny Packham dress I fell in love with. Our ceremony was interfaith, so we mixed and matched traditions in a way that felt right for us – we used my mother’s wedding veil as the fabric for our chuppah, we did a unity candle ceremony, our cousins shared readings, (including an excerpt from “Plato’s Symposium” that Matt had originally shared with me in a 1st anniversary card years before), and we were married by the judge that he worked for. Since we would be moving back to NYC days after our wedding, the night was also our farewell to Philadelphia. We loved the map of the city that our invitation designers used in our invitation suite so much, that we had it blown up and used it as a guestbook. We even sent our guests off at the end of the night with some special Philly treats – water ice and mini soft pretzels! It was an amazing feeling to see all the planning and little moments come together, but in the end, the best part was having all our beautiful friends and family come together to celebrate our new start as husband and wife.

From Bottle Pop Party Co.… Next to the rolling hills of the Brandywine Valley and the rush of the Brandywine River, legendary artist Andrew Wyeth made his home. He also made the historical land the focus of so many of his famous paintings. We wanted to bring the colors and textures of his artwork to life in a bridal shoot, shot on location at the home of many of his works, the Brandywine River Museum. The museum is a gorgeous, modern venue on its own so we used neutral, earthy colors with pops of blue, reminiscent of Wyeth’s paintings and kept the backdrop of the woods & river as our backdrop.

Inspiration came from the fields of wildflowers nearby and from the Helga series of paintings not only with the bride’s facial expressions but with the poses themselves. The cathedral length veil is the perfect interpretation of Wyeth’s flowing sheer curtains and we used it to mimic the flowing and draped fabric. Even the hair styles we used came from Wyeth’s famous Helga portraits using flower crowns and loose braids.

We are all so proud of this inspirational shoot because of the deep ties to the art history of our town and we truly believe that the Brandywine Valley is the perfect backdrop for a wedding in any season.

From the beautiful Bride… Inspiration for our wedding came from all of the lovely weddings we attended throughout the years and from both Gerard’s and I personal style; relaxed, fun, creative, and natural. It was a great experience overall! Gerard and I found time weekly to hash out ideas, research vendors and talk about upcoming deadlines–the process not only brought us closer together but really made the entire day feel like it was something WE planned and not just me, the bride.

Favorite Memories: The weather! It was a gorgeous 60 degree day, that we’d like to think was courtesy of of my grandmother, who passed 3 years ago. Putting my dress on, first look, serenading Gerard, The Philly Phanatic & dancing, photos outside with the bridal party and speeches by our loved ones.

DIY Projects: I made the program & ceremony boards and as well as all the signage at the bar area and cake table. I really wanted to capture both of our creative and whimsical personalities in these, I was super happy with the final result! I also made the stickers, using Zazzle.com, that were placed on each of the honey jar favors.

Flower crowns, I ended up finding a few simple DIY-flower crown tutorials online, went to Michaels to purchase materials and really created something unique for each of the 4 girls. I wanted something that resembled ‘wildflowers’ and had an organic feel that they could keep for years to come.

Elegant Philadelphia Country Club Wedding

The best way to describe this Philly affair? Classic with a twist. A gorgeous, pop of hot pink twist, to be specific. Morrissey Photo captured this wildly elegant labor of love, and just in case you want more we’ve got a WHOLE gallery waiting right here.

From the Bride… The inspiration for our wedding was to really capture the past, present and future and Dave and My life. To really make it about the important and special things in our lives. My mother had my clutch made out of my grandmother’s wedding dress and a brooch she used to wear. My grandmother passed away two years ago so this was really special for me to have a part of her there. I also was wearing her wedding ring. I had all my bridesmaids belts made by one of my vendors who i worked with when i was a buyer. This was a special touch to make their dresses unique and a nod to my job.

All of the flowers were done by my uncle. The flower company has been in my mother’s family for 3 generations now. On the candy table, we brought candy from South Africa and Pittsburgh to share a part of our background. There was a Steeler’s helmet cake for Dave’s love of the team and our cake was made from a friend of ours who is a master pastry chef at the top restaurant in Philadelphia called R2L. The cake stand even came from New Orleans. We had wine brought in from South Africa, and on each table we had wine notes detailing the trip Dave and I took there with my family and about each wine. The men got dressed at the shooting lodge while the women got dressed at my parent’s house. We had our monogram on everything, the menu, seating cards, programs, on the wall and napkins. we also had a little bit of a LOVE theme that was on the ice sculpture, mugs that were the ladies gifts at the end of the night and in the ladies bathroom.

We had an eye chart on our picture table that represented what Dave does for a living. The men’s gift at the end of the night was a small bottle of Amarula which is a sweet South African after dinner drink. There was a cigar bar with Ashton cigar’s. Our special drink came from our favorite speak easy in Philadelphia Dave and I always went to. We named it the Jetty since that is where he proposed to me in Avalon.

Some of my highlighted moments was when the doors to the church opened and I saw Dave for the first time. The time i got to spend at my parent’s house with my bridesmaids getting ready before the wedding. Also reading Dave’s letter on my bed at my parent’s house. Our first dance and seeing all our friends and family on the dance floor together having an amazing time. The speeches were also very special to me since everyone talked about Dave and I before we knew each other and then talked about us when we were together. It was great to hear new stories and old ones.

Romantic Wedding at the Colonial Dames in Philadelphia

Garden meets glam with a little DIY thrown in for good measure – this wedding captured by Redfield Photography is the whole shebang. Tucked inside this beautiful gallery by Redfield Photography is detail after detail of darling personal and elegant touches that will no doubt make your heart melt, so join us in swooning over every moment right here.

From the Bride…My husband and I were married exactly seven-and-a-half years from the day we started dating. College sweethearts, we had achieved so many milestones together: college degrees, first jobs, my graduation from law school and passing the bar, promotions, adopting the most amazing puppy, and the icing on the cake: our engagement and unforgettable wedding.

Once we visited the National Society of the Colonial Dames, we knew it was the perfect venue for our big day. It is an oasis inside center city Philadelphia: the building maintains a rich, historical character and the outside garden transports you away from the chaos of the city. Playing off the gorgeous blue walls of the Colonial Dames’ main room, we chose pale pink and gold for our wedding colors. The theme of our wedding was romantic and elegant: lace, chiffon bridesmaid dresses, lush flowers, simple stationery. We wanted to complement and enhance the character of the space.

While we quickly decided on the general theme of our wedding, many of the details did not come into place until a few weeks before the wedding (I do not recommend, ladies!). Because I am incredibly indecisive, I looked at, without exaggeration, over 250 pages of photographs on Style Me Pretty to achieve our look (along with countless magazines and pinterest pins!). After seeing styles from other real weddings, we decided that we wanted our bridal party to complement one another, but not to look exactly the same. For the maids, each got to choose a different style, short blush chiffon J.crew dress, and wore tan or pale gold shoes. For the groomsmen, each wore their own navy suit, cognac shoes, and a tie with blush and navy. Given the shade of pink, we ultimately purchased more than 30 ties (2 of which were purchased the day before the wedding!) before we were able to find the right colors! For our flowers, I fell in love with gorgeous pink and coral garden bouquets that were featured in a Style Me Pretty spread. We had our florist modify the shades to complement our wedding colors. Already way over budget, we made our own centerpiece vases from gluing together bowls and candlesticks from the Dollar Tree. It cost less than $2.50/centerpiece all said and done!

We also tried to add our own personal touches where possible. I created and printed all of our stationery myself based on a template I fell in love with. Rather than hire a calligraphist, we asked my mother-in-law to address our invitations and escort cards. My mother and I put together welcome bags for our out-of-town guests, which included my husband’s and my favorite snacks. For an alternative guest book, I cut paper hearts for our guests to sign (which will later be framed and displayed when we buy our first home). Our wedding favors were homemade cupcakes using a special recipe from my husband’s late-nana. To ensure our beloved pup was part of our day, we also had a friend create large cardboard cut outs of his adorable face that our guests used in the Photo Booth. Last, with the help of my mother-in-law, I had a handkerchief in my husband’s clan’s tartan made with the hope that our children and our children’s children will each carry it on their own wedding day.

Overall, our day was filled with so much love and happiness. We had just shy of 100 guests: our most important people. It was a priority of ours to have an intimate day. Our ceremony was held in the back garden and included classical music that was beautifully performed by the Philadelphia String Quartet. Although very nerve-wracking, we recited our own vows before we exchanged rings and officially became Mr. and Mrs. Wanting to maximize use of the outdoor space, the cocktail hour was also held in the garden. Despite the chill in the air, our guests enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres that showcased a compromise between my husband and my culinary tastes: comfort and foodie. Our caterer, J. Scott Catering, did an impeccable job in creating and executing the amazing bites and ensuring the day ran smoothly. Following a delicious dinner, we and our guests danced the night away.

I believe our photos really capture the love we share with each other and our family and friends. We could not have asked for a more perfect day!

Homemade Vanilla Infused Honey

With a little help from Juniper & Dash and Alexandra Whitney, honey gets a delicious facelift with the addition of vanilla bean. Can you think of a better combination? I certainly cannot! And this little nugget is so easy, and so delicious, it needs to make its internet rounds. And if it hasn’t already occurred to you, I have a good feeling mom would go nutty for the stuff this Mother’s Day!

From Juniper & Dash… I am obsessed with infusing things, combining two flavors to create a super flavor, perfection! This vanilla infused honey is so yummy I just kept eating it with a spoon. It wasn’t until I made the second batch that I actually got around to using it in tea, on bread, in a cocktail! These are now my go to hostess gift and will definitely be going out to the moms this Mother’s Day!

Serves 0Ingredients
  • Jar Local Honey
  • 1-2 Vanilla beans
  • Airtight container (the one I used was 7.4oz, try to keep around 1 cup}
  • Sharp knife
  • Honey spoon or chopstick for stirring
  • Cutting board
Instructions
  1. Pour honey into airtight container
  2. On the cutting board take one vanilla bean and slice halfway through the bean’s skin
  3. Spread the bean open and take the knife and scrape the beans into the honey
  4. Use the honey spoon and blend the beans into the honey
  5. Wipe off rim and seal container
  6. Vanilla beans will separate from honey the longer it sits. So stir well before serving.
  7. NOTE: When infusing honey most herbs must be removed from honey after sitting for 2-3 weeks. Vanilla honey is ready to serve immediately. Vanilla is one of the few spices that don’t need to be removed from honey before serving. So if you choose to make other infused honey’s make sure to refer to safety instructions.

Elegant Afternoon Brunch Wedding

In my book, brunch weddings are just about the most genius thing ever. When planned right, they make for a wedding EVERY bit as elegant as their evening affair counterparts, and this little beauty from Rhaina Taylor is a perfect example. Dive into all the daytime wedding beauty waiting right here.

From Rhaina Taylor… A real life “Roman Holiday.” Mary Pat Stahler and Lee Feigert met on Duquesne University’s Rome Campus in 2006. To paraphrase Mary’s mother, the maid of honor, after Mary returned from Rome, she kept mentioning Lee’s name repeatedly. Their fairytale continued with their big apple engagement. Lee took Mary to NYC for the weekend to see Wicked and to go ice skating at Rockefeller Center. They had always talked about doing this. Lee arranged for everyone to clear the ice, and their song was played, Better Together by Jack Johnson, over the loud speaker. He proposed to her with just the 2 of them on the ice. Once she said yes, the crowd around them started cheering. Lee also arranged to have it video taped and photographed, which Mary never noticed was happening.

Lee and Mary Pat’s wedding day began very early with their 1st meeting at 8am. Mary rounded the corner and gently tapped Lee on the shoulder. Across the street both Lee’s mother and Mary’s mother, the maid of honor, just beamed while watching this intimate moment. From their we ventured to Chatham University’s Campus for our 1st portrait session of the day. Mary had such a complete vision of her special day complete with a few very special portraits that she wanted taken. A reenactment of a childhood photo with her brothers and my personal favorite… a couples’ photos which included both sets of their parents.

The Duquesne University alums chose to marry in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit on Duquesne’s campus. Followed by their elegant brunch reception, held at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Mary Pat’s vision was of an intimate, rustic reception with a white, cream, and blush color palette. They enlisted the talented Shari Zatman of Perfectly Planned by Shari to help bring their vision to light. The bride wanted mixes of natural elements such as wood and burlap mixed with lace and crystal.

She also wanted her guests to be seated at one long farm table rather than be divided at separate tables. Shari brought the look together with lace tablecloth overlays placed over row after row of double width banquet tables paired with wooden farm chairs. Hanging low over the tables were elegant crystal chandeliers to add elegance to the tablescape. The floral centerpieces were a neutral palate of garden style flowers in an eclectic mix of containers. They wanted handmade elements of real lace incorporated into their invitation, so their stationer, Create Studio, handmade their invitations with wrapped lace ribbon details. The guests were assigned seats at the long table so they found their table assignments by looking for their names which were hand calligraphied on round cards which rested just below the clear glass charger plates at every place setting.

Their day was concluded with a portrait session inside Phipps Conservatory’s Broderie Room. As we walked through the building we took advantage of every nook and crany. Lastly we snuck outside to capture a few shots with Phipps’ signature glass enclosure as the background.

“Stick to your vision,” Mary Pat advises. “Don’t feel like you have to incorporate something into your wedding because of tradition if you don’t like the idea.” The couple did hold on to one special tradition, their first dance was to the same tune that played in the background during Lee’s fairytale proposal.

From the Bride… The biggest inspiration for our wedding day was for it to truly be a reflection of our relationship and who we are as a couple, as well as individuals. Joe grew up in Pennsylvania and loves the outdoors – I grew up in Ohio, but am a beach girl at heart; spending many childhood summers on Nantucket. We chose our location because it felt like a great combination of the two – encompassing both the woods and water elements.  Lake Naomi was the perfect venue for us and naturally informed many of our other design details for the wedding. We wanted our family and friends to enjoy a very intimate lakeside retreat and for the entire experience to be an elevated weekend away with everyone we love celebrating our marriage. Most of our guests rented lake houses within walking distance of our venue and we incorporated details such as a bonfire with s’mores, bridal party skeet shooting, golf scramble and a Sunday BBQ, which all contributed to the warm and casual vibe of the weekend.

Favorite moment: We had been given the great advice to take a few minutes together as a couple during the wedding day — just the two of us. It was pouring rain during our reception (thankfully indoors; the rain made it all the more cozy and romantic) and Joe and I ducked out to the covered deck and sat on a bench together after the first dances and cake cutting. Sitting there as husband and wife for the first time, sharing stories from the night, my head on his shoulder, watching the rain, listening to the music and laughter inside from all of our friends and family — I will never forget that moment. It was pure bliss.

My advise to brides planning:
1.These were Joe’s words of wisdom anytime we’d hit a road block or frustration, so he gets all the credit here – “At the end of the day, we will be just as married if ___ (fill in blank)”. Meaning that rain or shine, steak or chicken, DJ or band, etc. – we would be just as married at the end of the wedding, no matter what happened on the actual day – and that was all that mattered. He repeated it often, and it kept us focused on the true purpose of the wedding.
2. Plan incredibly well and then let go. Joe and I planned our entire wedding ourselves for the most part, with the help of some fantastic vendors, and it was definitely a labor of love. However, when the weekend finally arrived, we had planned so meticulously that we put our timelines, vendor info, etc. in the hands of our day-of planner (a friend who had offered to lend her services) and just said “that’s all we can do!” Thankfully, we had some great people who we trusted to see that things ran smoothly on the big day, but it’s SO important to just let go of the planning and really enjoy everything!
3. Prioritize your budget and stick to it—identify as a couple the top three things you can’t live without (we chose to invest in venue, photographer and food) and then find creative ways to cut costs on the other event components.

I worked with my dad, who is excellent at sketching in his free time, to create a wedding logo and draw a map of the important wedding sites at Lake Naomi, which was distributed in welcome baskets for guests at their lake houses and hotels

My dad and I danced our father/daughter dance to “My Girl” by the Temptations – a bit untraditional, but it’s been a favorite of ours since I was a little girl and we love to let loose and dance with lots of twirling and singing, so it was fitting!

Our music choices were very important and personal, from the ceremony through the reception. The bridal party walked in to “The Only Living Boy in New York” by Simon and Garfunkel and I walked down the aisle to “Something in the Way She Moves” by James Taylor. Each song throughout the entire evening was very carefully chosen. Our first dance was to “Let It Be Me” by Ray Lamontagne.

Rustic Terrain At Styers Wedding

Perfectly rustic, perfectly pretty and everything in between, this wedding is an example of laid-back elegance done oh-so-right.  The perfect merger of rich, dark hues with an eclectic mix of details, it’s the sort of day that makes you wish you could marry all over again… just so you could steal every last stylish moment captured by Danielle Nowak.  And we totally support that, by the way.  Click here for more.

From the Bride… We both love the outdoors and wanted our wedding to feel earthy, yet elegant, so we chose to have our wedding at Terrain at Styer’s, which is a rustic venue that serves amazing seasonal menu items sourced from local Philadelphia farms. Our vision for the night was to create an intimate dinner party rather than a traditional event, so dinner was served family style in a cozy wooden barn and followed by an assortment of seasonal pies.

From there, other choices like floral arrangements and s’mores by the fire pit all came naturally with the feeling we were trying to capture. Tom and I both work at the Urban Outfitters home office, so the majority of our décor were items found at URBN samples sales. However, our favorite piece of décor was a Spoke Woven dream catcher that we received from a close friend the day before our wedding. It was an impromptu addition that we hung from the temple during our ceremony and really helped to set the mood for the evening.

Looking back, after months of planning and countless appointments, it was exhilarating to see everything come together so seamlessly. Having both of our families and friends gathered together to witness and celebrate our love will forever be a fond memory.

1940s Wedding in Pittsburgh

In the 1940’s, the microwave was invented, the Jeep made it’s debut and Velcro found it’s way to store shelves. Casablanca came out in 1943, It’s a Wonderful Life shortly thereafter. And weddings? Well, they were driven by a sense of all out hollywood glam. So it’s no surprise that this couple took a nod from the 40’s and with photos by Craig Photography – held a vintage affair gone totally gorg. Click here for more!

This was an incredible wedding during the Fall season in Pittsburgh. The bride decided she wanted a more period-styled wedding so the overall style was from the 1940’s era. She really did a wonderful job. The details were amazing!

The florist, April from Mocha Rose Floral Designs, worked with the bride to develop a floral theme of dutch still life that incorporated both floral and fruit designs and it was so gorgeous!! It just so happened that the boutique hotel that the wedding and reception took place at (Mansions on Fifth) had paintings of dutch still life throughout the establishment.

Stephanie & Dante also had love note quotes at each table to accompany the floral designs, which gave such a romantic feel to everything. The place was just dripping with florals and romance. The ceremony took place on the grand staircase, which was draped with a giant floral garland. Even the band was a 1940’s swing band, which made the night complete!

Intimate Backyard Horse Farm Wedding

When it came time for this wedding pro to plan her own special day, she knew exactly what to do. With help from The Kept Nest, she planned a completely bespoke affair at her parent’s stunning horse farm with Alexandra Meseke there to capture. And from the moment she arrived to the ceremony on a tractor (ah-mazing!) to the very last dance, the day shined with love inside and out.

From the Bride… It’s hard to say what my favorite part of our wedding was..besides the getting married part. Darren and I have been together since my senior year of college; so when we got married 8 years later I had had some time to think about what I wanted our big day to be like. It probably helped a bit that I’m a wedding photographer, and had started taking mental notes at my client’s weddings about what I loved about their days. So when I actually got to plan my own wedding it really went pretty smoothly.

We were planning the wedding from our home in Portland, Oregon, but the wedding would actually take place at my parents horse farm in Grantville, PA. It was important for me to find a planner/coordinator to help me out, and that’s where April from The Kept Nest came into play. I chatted with her about what I was thinking..rustic farm wedding, Cotton florals, pale peaches and pinks & golds for colors & a vintage camera theme, since we both work in the Photography industry..as well as a touch of equestrian for me, I’ve been riding since I was 5. April took all of that, a Pinterst board I made for her, and all of the props I had been gathering and shipping to my parents house and ran with it, and she brought it all together beautifully .

The most important thing to us about the day, was for everything to be deliberate and thoughtful, pretty too, but we wanted to smash as much meaning into the day as possible. So we started with Alexandra, our photographer, who has known us both since before we started dating and went from there. My brother was the speaker of Honor(officiant type person, we did a self sealing marriage) Our siblings made up most of our wedding party. My dad drove me up to the ceremony on a tractor, and walked me down the aisle. Our moms both did readings from Jane Eyre & Pablo Neruda, and then we read vows that we wrote…his were better than mine!

We did our first dance to Hold my Head Above Water by Quiet Company, and finished it off with fireworks to symbolize when Darren first asked me to be his girlfriend on a rooftop in Brooklyn, and then 6 years later when he asked me to be his wife on a mountain top in Oregon, both on the Fourth of July. There’s nothing I would have changed about the day at all, it was perfect.

Traditional Pittsburgh Wedding at the William Penn Omni Hotel

I know you come here for your daily dose of weddings, but I’m just as certain you’re here for your daily dose of happy too. Valerie Barnes Film has delivered, because the couple at the center of this wedding has both a love and a happiness that are contagious!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/78829156 600 338]

From the cinematographer… Even though Susanna and Carl met and now reside in Boston, she chose to marry in her hometown of Pittsburgh because she wanted to be married in St. Paul’s Cathedral, the church where her parents were married in 1972. ” I can’t wait to be in that church. It’s so beautiful.”

When she brought Carl to Pittsburgh for the first time she took him to the church for a cousin’s wedding and told him, “I’m going to get married one day in this church.”

On the morning of her wedding day, she dressed at her parent’s home in Fox Chapel. Though her dress was designed by Monique L’huiller and her shoes by Badgley Mischka, she added a few personal items to complete her look — the veil she wore was the her mother’s wedding veil and the bracelet she wore was also borrowed from her mother.

The wedding reception was held in the William Penn Omni Hotel. “I loved that it was in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh and also thought it was perfect for the feel of our wedding. “

Susanna’s thought about her marriage, “I hope for our marriage that we are able to hold in our hearts and our minds the love and admiration and appreciation that we have for each other today everyday, and that we keep growing not only as individuals but as a couple.”
