Minnesota Flower Farm Wedding by Amy Majors Photography

Amy Majors and Debra Ackmann were the photo geniuses behind our next wedding and to say that they captured some beautiful moments is an understatement. It is more like they knocked it out of the freaking park with each and every image. Can you tell that we mega-heart Amy Majors Photography? Well we also mega-heart this Minnesota flower farm wedding to pieces. It is perfectly shabby-chic, effortlessly adorable and the color palette is totally worthy of a swoon or two. That is what you call a recipe for wedding perfection. See more of this pretty day in the gallery.

From the Bride…

Shabby-chic. That, in one word is what best describes the feeling of our wedding. Back when we got engaged around Christmas, I immediately started visioning a wedding that could take place in an Anthropologie store. I’ve always been in love with the modern vintage look – a mixture of classy meets quirky. Now, we all know weddings can be extremely expensive – especially when getting caught up in all of the little details. When I say “details,” I mean everything from the invitations and place cards, to the table settings and favors. I’ll be honest in saying that it’s hard not to pay attention to these things. After all, these are some of the things that your guests will remember, and set your wedding apart from the 100 other weddings that they will attend over the years. As I started looking for inspiration, I found that weddings have become a huge industry. You can find everything you need for your big day on one stop on-line stores. Unfortunately, everything on these sites seem to be cheesy, plastic, cookie-cutter visions of someone else’s cardboard wedding. So, with realizing this, I decided to take on these “details” myself. After all, I wanted our wedding to be one to remember – and what better way to personalize something than to personally making these things yourself? We chose to go with a muted teal, and orange color theme. It ended up being a lovely combination – just look at the pictures! Once these colors were picked, everything seemed to fall into place. I went to school for graphic design, and am currently looking for any opportunity to use what I’ve learned. So, I attempted to use my creative design skills for all of the printed materials – the save-the-dates, the invitations, and the programs. We decided to get married in Stillwater, MN at Camrose Hill Flower Farm. It’s a delightful place – landscaped with old red barns, and flowers in every direction. The pavilion and tent where the reception took place was glittered with lighted branches, lanterns, and vintage chandeliers which hung from the ceiling. I really wanted to capture the feeling of the farm in the invitations. By using the chosen colors, and creating layers of vintage patterns, they turned out to be perfect. After the invites were mailed out, and the wedding day was approaching, I found other do-it-yourself projects. We painted Mason jars a light teal color – replicating the old ones you see at antique stores. We went to every thrift store imaginable to find random vases – varying in size. The centerpieces for the reception ended up consisting of one jar filled with beautiful orange and white flowers, and two mismatched skinny vases. They looked beautiful on the orange tablecloths.

it was a hot and muggy Friday. But despite the heat, we, along with our friends and family, made the day magical. The ceremony was surreal, as we were wed alongside all of the people who have played an important role in who we’ve grown to be as a couple. We wanted our wedding to be a time of true celebration, and a “thank you” to those who have encouraged us along this journey. We said our vows outdoors, surrounded by the remnants of an old dairy farm, and tall lush trees. I felt like I was standing back in time, and somehow everyone I loved was there enjoying it with me. After the ceremony, people found their place cards (which I made out of patterned paper and buttons) hanging from tiny clothespins attached to twine that was tied to two wooden stakes. They became something people could take home with them, along with their box filled with old-fashioned caramels and taffy we had sitting at each place setting. I really went to town on the patterned paper I found at a specialty paper store! It was so fun mixing and matching colors that would compliment the quirky feeling I was going for. That night, people delighted in good food and drinks, our personal favorite desserts, music, and dancing. We rented an authentic 1950’s photo booth where guests could take endless strips of pictures to remember the event. People put on silly hats, boas, and their own funny faces. We told people to use some of their poses to make a scrapbook page for what became our guest book. It was a hit, and the book continues to make us laugh to this day. Who knew our old neighbor could look so sassy! With all of this said, I can truly say that I wouldn’t have done anything different. When planning a wedding, it’s important to never lose sight of your love for each other – after all, that’s what a wedding is meant for, right? Also, never lose sight of yourselves and who you are. There’s endless opportunities to make the day your own – you just have to reach into your creative self and find out how. All of the DIY projects are worthwhile, and they’ll make your wedding unique – becoming a little glimpse of who you are and what you want your day to reflect.

Minneapolis Wedding by Smart & Chic Bride + a Giveaway!

Planning your destination wedding is stressful, to say the least! You are beholden to trust the recommendations and referrals of others and hold endless long-distance meetings with your vendors. The stylists at Smart & Chic Bride have done everything humanly possible to assure you that hair and make-up are totally stress-free and the two things you can check off that list! And to show you just how beautiful the result can be we’re sharing an early summer affair planned from afar. This destination wedding has lots of smiles, tons of fresh florals, and the day wouldn’t be complete without one totally gorgeous, glowing bride…

From Smart & Chic…

Planning a wedding in a different state than you’re living can be particularly difficult and nerve-wracking, but we make sure to take extra special care of these brides. Communication is key – respond in a timely matter, answer all questions, discuss styles using many photos (especially if a trial run can’t be done) so the stylist understands what the bride is hoping for and the bride can take comfort in trusting a stylist she’s never met to do her makeup and hair on such a special occasion. Johanna was a joy to work with. She has an irrepressible spirit and glow from the inside out. Adding a pop of Bobbi Brown’s French Pink blush and MAC’s Silver Dusk to highlight her cheeks just brought out more of her natural radiance. Johanna’s hair was styled with a thermal spray to hold her loose waves the entire day. Traveling from Los Angeles, Courtney, Johanna’s maid of honor, chose a loose side bun hair style that complemented her face shape. To achieve a soft, yet defined eye, we used Smart and Chic’s water proof mascara in darkest black and applied cluster lashes.

From the lovely bride…

Jonathan (or Kich as he is known by his friends) and I live in Los Angeles, where Kich grew up. We met in Madison, Wisconsin in college where we lived only a fire escape apart. After a beautiful surprise engagement in an apple orchard near Palm Springs, California, we decided to get married in the Twin Cities, where I grew up. We fell in love with the Depot ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel located in the historic former train station in Minneapolis. The space had beautiful traditional elegance right in the center of Minneapolis.

We do not consider ourselves to be a traditional couple, so we wanted to find ways to add our personal touch to give the wedding flair. Our wedding invitations were a bright teal and our flowers were bright and summery and looked great next to the J&J orange embroidered napkins, which were borrowed from friends who coincidentally shared our initials. The black and white cake was decorated with teal ribbon and bright flowers. We chose non-traditional music for both the ceremony and the reception. Kich walked down the aisle to a piano/flute rendition of “Final Countdown” by Europe and our first dance was to a favorite song, “Blue Skies” by the Allman Brothers.

We also wanted our guests to love the Twin Cities and feel a part of the wedding festivities. We made up J2 welcome bags in orange and bright teal (like our invitations) that included a detailed list of our favorite spots in the cities. Amber Procaccini took great photos around the Guthrie Theater, one of our favorite areas in the city.

Months before the wedding, guests were invited to decorate a cloth square with wedding wishes to us. Kich’s mother sewed them together to form a chuppah cover, the traditional canopy that Jews are married under. It was special to stand below the creative artwork of so many friends and family as we were married. We were surprised at the reception by the performance of three bridesmaids who re-wrote the lyrics to my favorite Madonna song, Like a Prayer, with the chorus “When he says her name, it’s like a little prayer, You couldn’t dream this up, you make a perfect pair…” All night the dance floor was packed with dancing and laughter.

As for the attire, my dress was the very first wedding dress I tried on. I went with my mom to the Wedding Shoppe in St. Paul right after Kich and I got engaged and immediately told the salesclerk, Carol, that I would NOT be buying a dress that day. I didn’t know what I was looking for and all I had was a photo of a dress I’d seen in Spain when I studied abroad well before a wedding was even a seedling of an idea. Carol at the Wedding Shoppe first brought me a Tara Keely lace dress to try that didn’t look anything like the photo. I fell in love with it and even though it wasn’t like me to make such a fast decision, I bought it on the spot. My five bridesmaids wore black dresses of their choice. The girls live in five different cities from the Northwest to the Southeast of the country so it was easier to let them choose their own and they all looked fabulous. With simple, bright purple and yellow irises, they really popped.

Julie and Amber from Smart & Chic Bride did a great job on our hair and makeup. They were so easy to work with and made us all look beautiful. It made the day so much more relaxing to have them come to us at the Depot. Julie even came back right before the ceremony to make sure my hair and makeup looked fresh.

This delightful Minnesota wedding isn’t the only piece of pretty we have up our sleeves today. An absolutely adorable farm wedding took place on June 26th 2010 in Owatonna, MN (1 hour south of the Twin Cities) at the groom’s family farm.  Home grown flowers made by a friend of the bride created the bouquets and table settings.  Tan suits for the groom and groomsmen gave the wedding party a relaxed feel.  The bride used green and white with some brown and tan as the overall color scheme and flowers were everywhere; flower seed packets as escort cards, hydrangea motifs on invites, and stickers, and lawn games took place in between flower gardens on the property.  The bride’s mother had passed away so there was a single gold ring tied into the bride bouquet as a reminder that Mom was there in spirit.  The dance was outside under the trees in the hot summer evening and cupcakes and a candy bar were set up for guests to snack on after dinner.

Lake Minnetonka Wedding by Jennifer Cress

We are going to round off this lovely day of weddings with another lakeside affair but this time we are staying stateside in a scrumptious garden infused soirée at Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Jennifer Cress was on hand to capture every last gorgeous image and I must say I am slightly obsessed with the flowers. As in, it was hard not to flood the post with all things floral. I held back a wee bit but you’ll understand my fervor when you feast your eyes on this perfect day. Check out the rest of the Lake Minnetonka festivities in the gallery.

Shamus and I love camping and being outdoors so we knew we wanted a summer or fall wedding and for as much of it to take place outside as possible.  We wanted a wedding that was not too formal but was full of meaning. We knew we wanted a wedding that was a great party with a lot of good food and drinks.

I grew up on Lake Minnetonka in a suburb on Minneapolis.  I have always loved sharing a summer day with friends and family on the lake – so it was an easy decision to decide to have the wedding on Lake Minnetonka.  Finding a place to have it on the lake proved a little more difficult.  We found the ceremony site easily – a public park on the lake called Noerenberg Gardens. For the reception, I really wanted something that was individual to us, a place that doesn’t have a wedding booked every weekend.  We considered private homes, farms, an arboretum before it hit me – my parents have a private home on the lake.  It doesn’t have a sprawling yard or a stone staircase or elaborate gardens, but the space would fit our estimated guest count perfectly and it would be so intimate and comfortable.

The inspiration for the design came from a mix of resources. Primarily, from the beautiful sunsets I grew up watching from the dock of our home.  The save the date was a postcard photo of a sunset taken from said dock.  The bridesmaid dresses were chosen to represent the colors seen in a sunset and the rest of the event was designed around the colors of sunset, though softened.

From Jenna of Eat Drink Pretty:

I designed this dessert table to celebrate Eat Drink Pretty’s blogiversary. The vision was to bring my blog to life by asking the question, “if Eat Drink Pretty was a dessert table, what would it look like?” The colors and overall style of the table were influenced by the blog design; lots of pinks and grays, a chandelier and rows of tasty pink treats. Many of the desserts were homemade and were inspired by the many recipes I have featured on my blog over the past year.

First up is a Minnesota wedding sent to us by the fabulous Jenn Cress. Moody grays and crisp greens and yellows are a match made in color heaven and we are giving this little slice a standing ovation. Plus, the adorable couple held their reception at a GORGEOUS library. Now if that isn’t a dream, I don’t know what is. For more from this chartreuse infused day, check out the gallery.

The bride and groom planned an early fall wedding with vintage flair.  The colors were gray, yellow and chartreuse, which played out in the flowers designed by the bride, invitations, programs, bridesmaid dresses and brides shoes! Something old was a garter passed down from generation to generation on the groom’s mother’s side.  Something new was a pair of yellow crystal earrings gifted to the bride by her mom. Special touches included family wedding photos at the reception, a ‘live’ photo booth for guests, the bride’s sister styling hair, and a late night snack of the groom’s favorite Chipotle tacos.

The bride led a flower workshop with friends and family two days before the wedding – everyone pitched in to make sure the flowers were completed on time and to the bride’s standards! Their wedding day far exceeded all expectations!!

Minnesota Wedding by Jenn Cress

Oh so sweet is a phrase that comes to mind with this next wedding, sent to us by the lovely photographer Jenn Cress. The details are simple and the love is apparent which really made for the most charming day. Besides, who doesn’t love a mason jar I ask you? How about dozens all lined up in a row? I know I’m a HUGE fan. This outdoor wedding took place on Harriet Island in Minnesota with views of the river and the St. Paul skyline and lots of adorable kiddos running around. Oh happy, happy day.

{click here for the FULL gallery of pretty images}

I always knew I would get married outside, but planning an outdoor wedding in Minnesota is risky. Harriet Island was a perfect choice for us because the historic pavilion was available in case of rain (or snow!). Luckily, we had sun all day, and a sky full of stars all night. The Saint Paul skyline right across the river was magical when the sun went down.

The inspiration for our decor and details came from a vintage pillowcase of my grandmothers. The bold pattern and quirky color combination fascinated me. I spent the year before my wedding collecting mason jars of all sizes, which we filled with candles and various flowers. I wanted my bouquet to feel like an English garden, with lots of colors and textures. The ostrich feathers added a unique touch. We wanted to treat our guests to delicious food so we had an Italian feast. We had cupcakes for dessert, and caramel apples from our local apple orchard for favors. Our photographer did a fantastic job capturing all of our special moments. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect day!

From the insanely charming paper goods to the cake that literally make me squeal, I am completely dying over every last bit of this shoot. Oh and the details, most of them were simple DIY crafts done with a great eye and a knack for all things pretty. To make the “How Sweet It Is Sign”the team simply found chipboard glittered letter cutouts at Michael’s which they glued onto decorative paper, folded over the string and then glued together. I mean, come on…how great is that?

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Red Ribbon Studio, Paperista and Just Bloomed and the other AMAZING vendors that made this happen. It is sure to inspire from now until forever.

It was a cold January day in Minnesota when we saw this bright, colorful, fun and whimsical inspiration board by Annie Packman. We knew that bringing this inspiration board to life would bring a little sunshine into our snowy Minnesota winter. This board was so inspiring, we really ran with the whimsical and fun style. The setting for our shoot was the sweetest little candy shop in Minneapolis called Sugar Sugar. Winter E-Session

And speaking of absolutely gorgeous Winter white inspirations…I fell pretty hard for this adorable e-shoot. It’s few and far between that an engagement shoot will give me the real wedding butterflies, but this one did just that. Shot by Laura Ivanova Photography, the couple used the cut-your-own-tree farm in Minneapolis, Minnesota as their backdrop so that they would always remember their first Christmas together. SO stinking cute.

e-session

A ridiculously adorable couple, a gorgeous “set” and two huge balloons…not sure it gets any better than this. And you know what else. These shots actually catapulted me right out of my winter blues and got me so excited for the cold weather. Winter boots, here I come.

Thank you so very much to Laura Ivanov for sending us today’s inspiration! And to the couple…Kristi and Keven, with this much style, I can’t WAIT to see what you do with your wedding!

Classic Elegance From Red Ribbon Studio

As promised ~ today, we have two totally different styled weddings and one sensational LBB photographer!

First up ~ Maribeth, from Red Ribbon Studio is sharing Jamie & Randy’s May wedding with us. It’s classic, it’s elegant and it’s simply timeless in it’s beauty …

Jamie and Randy were married at the historic Semple Mansion in Minneapolis. Between Jamie’s Peter Langner gown, the grandeur of the venue and the wedding artist they commissioned … well, their wedding kind of blew me away!

Mimi Wedding Planning worked with the couple to pull their modern classic wedding vision together. The floral decor is to die for … and the stunning cake is from Gateaux Inc.

Their wedding artist was Nicole Herzog. She sketched and painted throughout the entire evening and at the end of the day … a gorgeous painting to commemorate the celebration was complete!

What a great idea.  A HUGE thanks to Maribeth at Red Ribbon Studio … and to Jamie and Randy for sharing this joyful day!

* * *

We’ll have another wedding from Maribeth at Red Ribbon Studio in just a bit, so do check back!

Wedding Photography By Red Ribbon Studio

Just a heads up about tomorrow’s featured Little Black Book photographer, Maribeth at Red Ribbon Studio based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Here’s what one bride had to say about Maribeth’s style~

“…you managed to be everywhere, never missing a shot or a moment, but in the most respectful way… your work is fun, it’s fresh, it’s sophisticated, it’s clean, it’s clever and smart!” Pretty great testimonial, I’d say.

So ~ until tomorrow ~ when we’ll be featuring two of Red Ribbon Studio’s weddings with two totally different styles! Jamie & Randy’s elegant wedding at the Semple Mansion in Minneapolis and Jessie & Chris’ elegant backyard wedding on the local polo fields in Cummings, Iowa.

Real Wedding: Carla and Jack, II

The second wedding that we are featuring today is pure gorgeousness. Which is exactly what we’d expect from the amazing ladies at Bastian + Skoog. Not to mention, I love Winter weddings, as there is something so blissfully romantic about them. And this particular couple, styled the affair to capture the simplicity and beauty of the season.

la vie photography

The photography team behind the affair is the unbelievably talented Sally of La Vie Photography in Minneapolis. Sally’s style is simple, elegant and most of all, joyful. Every picture is an absolute beauty.

la vie photography

It’s always really nice to come back to a classic black and white affair. It isn’t done that often anymore, but when it is (and when it’s done right) the look is forever timeless and chic. Love that.

Real Wedding: Carla and Jack

This next wedding is all about the chic. Winter whites paired with crisp blacks. I know that it’s basically Spring, but every now and then, I see a Winter wedding that just makes me happy. This one, with it’s adorable bride, classic but not overdone Winter styling, and perfect details did just that. It was shot by the amazingness at La Vie Photography in Minneapolis, but I first saw it on Bastian+Skoog’s oh-so-stylish blog
