From the Bride…We had been together for 4.5 years, so I knew the time was coming but didn’t know it would happen when it did! We went to Italy to celebrate my 30th birthday. Italy is very special to us. It was our first trip together during the summer of 2009, and Verona (home of Romeo and Juliet!) was especially special. We like to think we both fell in love in Verona. Every year since, life gave us an amazing opportunity to go back to Verona on a short holiday between work travels. Each year, I took a picture with the same pose in front of my favorite fountain in Piazza delle Erbe of Verona. So after a few days of traveling through the Lago di Garda area of Italy, we stopped over in Verona. We were going for an evening walk after dinner. We stopped at the fountain, and I turned around, and Christian was down on one knee. It was nothing but tears after that!

For the wedding, Christian’s whole family flew in from Germany, and I had many relatives that traveled from out of town also. It was the first time either of us have ever seen everyone at once. It was a joyous occasion for all. And it was more than just the wedding day. We had an entire four days of fun with everyone so it was absolutely perfect. Some of the things that really made our day special was the diversity that was represented at our wedding. Each of the readings at the ceremony were translated into German. At the reception, we played Arabic and American music. And before dinner, we had a short cultural prayers recited in three languages: English, German, and Arabic, representing each of our backgrounds and cultures. That was so special and unique.

My ultimate favorite memory, is getting ready to walk down the aisle with my cousin Steven, and I remember seeing Christian at the front for the first time. Everything around me went blurry. I didn’t hear music. I didn’t see people. I only saw Christian. It was perfect.

Golden Hour Tutorial: How To Get Magical Wedding Photos & Video

It should come as no surprise that we’re wedding photography and film junkies ’round these parts. After all, this little ‘ol blog is fueled by pretty imagery and film. So today, we’ve teamed up with the talents at Epic Motion and Curtis Wiklund Photography to chat about the prime time of your wedding day to capture those magical, sunlit moments: Golden Hour.

[iframe http://www.youtube.com/embed/AeezdWyHavk 600 338]

From Epic Motion… There are certain things in life where timing really matters. If you’re a business owner, you know that you can launch a new product at any time and may have okay results, but if you launch it at just the right time when your customers are going to take the most notice, you will get the most out of your money spent.

Maybe you work in marketing and know that if you send a tweet at midnight, less people might read it than if you wait until, say 10:00 am. Experienced shoppers know when to strike to get the best deals, and farmers know when to plant to yield the best crop.

As wedding filmmakers shooting mostly in natural light (not using external lights), and as natural light photographers will attest to, timing matters when it comes to getting the most memorable shots. So much of our work revolves around chasing the best light and often chasing 1 hour of the day in particular. It’s called Golden Hour and it’s the small window of time when that light is going to produce magical results that no other time of day can offer.

Check out the video to find out when that is and how you can work with your videographer and photographer to make sure they can get shots of you during that time.

Intimate Wedding in the Woods

Love is limitless as this couple discovered when they canceled their original plans and opted for a woodland ceremony surrounded by close family and furry friends. The sprinkling sky didn’t stop The Days Design from curating an exceptionally romantic day filled with vintage tea cups and bright blooms, and Kelly Sweet’s camera caught every last bit. See it all right here!

From The Bride & Groom…When planning our dream wedding, we hit a few bumps. We lost our first venue due to poor management. With less than a year left we booked another venue, but the style was completely different. We basically had to start planning from scratch. Six months before the wedding I got laid off from my job. That’s when we decided to plan something more intimate and budget friendly.

We ditched the venue (and our $1,200 deposit) in favor of Nature. We got married in the Sanctuary Woods Nature Preserve near Lake Macatawa in Holland, MI. Instead of having the 200 guests we originally planned on, we invited only our parents, wedding party, and furry friends.

Because of the intimate style, we were able to have the most amazing “Alice In Wonderland” inspired Tea Party. Shelby from The Days Design came out to set up the beautiful table and flowers in the pouring rain. She did an amazing job, despite the circumstances. We are so thankful for all of her help.

Our amazing cake came from Second Floor Bakery in Holland, MI. We decided to go big for drama, and the humidity and rain melted the fondant in the most spectacular way. So Mad Tea Party!

From the beginning I knew that the photography was the most important part (besides marrying the man of my dreams, of course) to me. I could not have asked for a more amazing, talented and patient photographer. Not only did Kelly Sweet follow us through the woods in the rain, while carrying her equipment; she also made the most out of the unexpected weather, and gave us creative, magazine worthy photos that we will pass on to our grandchildren.

Prior to the ceremony we laid out a circle of rocks for us to stand in. We placed the Rose Quartz, (a gift from Holly at Mother Moon in Saugatuck), at the top of the circle. The procession began and we walked in towards the circle and LaRissa invited us into the circle to start our ceremony. A lovely poem was read by LaRissa that described the union and symbolism of being out in the woods surrounded by nature. We exchanged our vows and placed our rings and declared our love.

After our vows we drank from a chalice (from Sweetwater Pottery in Montana) to bless our union. We invited our loved ones into our circle to drink from the cup as we were all united as a whole. As we walked out of the ceremony circle, now united as husband and wife, our guests threw seeded confetti that will bloom into wildflowers. After the ceremony we moved to the table where we sat as a family and made rounds of toasts and had cake together before the night ended.

My best advice to couples planning their big day is this; Spending tons of money doesn’t make your day perfect and you can’t control the weather, what makes your day perfect is the love that you’re celebrating and nothing can change that.

From the beautiful Bride…It’s an annual tradition of Matt and I to go to the Ohio State and Michigan State football games. We’ve gone every single year since the year we first started dating. (2 years running.) The week prior to the game, Matt let me know we were to tailgate with his co-workers that happen to be Michigan State Alumni. (My alma mater, not Matt’s, so I was very excited to be surrounded by more MSU fans than Ohio State.) Fast forward to 1 week later, September 29th, the day of the big game. Both teams were top BIG 10 teams so it just-so-happens to be an even bigger rival year than the years’ prior. Keeping tradition alive, Matt decides to take me on a detour to a Cider Mill to pick up homemade donuts and cider to bring to the tailgate on the way to East Lansing. Still not expecting anything and running extremely late, I agree to make the detour and pick up the cider and donuts. Now, if anyone has ever experienced warm, gooey, homemade donuts from a Michigan cider mill, you’ll know how upset I was to not be able to eat these delicious treats due to my Celiac disease. While contemplating eating a donut and feeling sick for the rest of the day, Matt goes to the car and grabs a brown, greasy, paper lunch bag and hands it to me. “I made them for you.” He says. I open the bag to find a handful of homemade Gluten Free donuts. The engagement ring was SUPPOSED to be hiding within the bag of donuts and instead, it is sitting right on top of them. Matt gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him. To make this long story a little shorter, I spent the next 45 minutes in the car thinking we were going to share our engagement with co-workers of his that I hardly knew. We arrive in East Lansing to a surprise tailgate party with my entire family and all of my best friends from Michigan and Chicago. People traveled hundreds of miles to share this special day with us and I still get butterflies every time I think about it!

Planning ended up being a little more difficult for me than I had originally thought. My Pinterest boards seemed to be scattered and trying to narrow down a handful of ideas/details seemed to be impossible for the girl who loved EVERYTHING. That’s when hiring Aletha at Pearl’s Events, LLC changed my life. She helped me narrow down an idea that was 100% different and everything Matt and I ever wanted. We’ve been to what seems like a million weddings and we wanted something different; something no one else had. When Aletha suggested the idea of a NO burlap, GLAM barn theme, we went with it. When people hear “Barn Wedding”, majority assume: “burlap.” That’s exactly what we didn’t want. The more glitz, glam, gold, and “Southern” charm, the better for us! (We are Charlotte natives now!) We started with the flowers by Elizabeth at Posh Petals. She had done weddings at the Blue Dress Barn before and was thrilled to try something different. Aletha and her team were also excited for the “Southern Glam” theme. Our photographers (Ben + Mindy at Studio 6.23 also happen to own “Fancy Fray,” a vintage wedding furniture rental company. It was so convenient to be able to talk photography as well as pew seating for 250, couch rentals for family seating and lounge area, coral doors for our entrance, etc. Having the ability to work with vendors that had previously done weddings at the Blue Dress Barn made the planning process a lot less stressful than originally imagined. As for the entertainment and other vendors, we went with Carolyn Berry at Two Unique for catering. They were the wild card for us who had never done a wedding at the barn before. To follow my own words of advice (below), I trusted the professionals and they delivered above and beyond our wildest dreams! Our photographers, Ben + Mindy at Studio 6.23 were amazingly sweet and so easy to work with, and Jason and his crew at Highway 61 films were absolutely fantastic and created one of the most beautiful cinematic wedding videos we’ve ever seen.

Matt and I were married in Benton Harbor, Michigan. About 2 hours from his hometown of Chicago, IL, and 3.5 hours from my hometown in Detroit, Michigan. It was the perfect in-the-middle “destination” wedding for the couple that didn’t really want a FULL destination wedding. We wanted a party, something our family and friends would never forget. We started the weekend out at the Painted Turtle Inn for the rehearsal dinner. A backyard BBQ and Pig Roast with everyone invited to the wedding. (I think 150+ total people showed up.) It was very important to us that everyone willing to spend the time and money to come to our wedding be included in ALL of the wedding festivities. Red and white checkered tablecloths, sunflowers and wild flowers picked from a field adorned the tables, and we were able to welcome all of our family and friends to an unforgettable weekend.

I recently quit my full-time advertising job to become a yoga teacher. While Matt woke up with a hearty breakfast catered at the Painted Turtle Inn, I greeted any guest who wanted to join me at the beach for a morning yoga session. About 15 people showed up and for some, it was their very first yoga class ever. What an amazing feeling to wake up, share an hour of yoga with the ones you love, and marry the love of your life a few hours after that! After yoga, my bridesmaids and I went back to our rental house in downtown St. Joseph to start and finish pampering sessions. It was so beautiful to spend the day every woman who has made such an important impact on my life! (3 mothers, 4 sisters, 5 nieces, and my 5 very best friends!) When pampering was finished, we took a limo to the barn. All except for myself exited the limo and I patiently waited for my father who I had not yet seen. He arrived alone in his camper (Yep, CAMPER!) that he had been using to cart the rest of our very large family in for the weekend. It was here that him and I had our “special” moment that we had been waiting for our entire lives. The moment had finally come for us to walk down the aisle together. We waited behind a tree for the song to come on that I knew I would walk to the moment I first heard it. “Just Say Yes” by Snow Patrol ended (the song the bridal party and Matt walked to) and “Come to Me” by Goo Goo Dolls started. I told my dad “just 30 more seconds” as Aletha at Pearls Events, LLC informed me I could start walking. It was a very special moment that I needed. (Note to future brides: TAKE that moment!) :) As I turned the corner and saw Matt standing there next to my step-father who was performing the ceremony (his first ceremony ever!) I couldn’t help but feel as though no moment, past or present, could be better than this.

We really wanted our wedding to include something for everyone. Prior to the ceremony, guests could enjoy Macarons from Le Petit Macaron in 4 different flavors, water and our signature drinks. The post-ceremony, cocktail hour included our signature drinks once again, with an heirloom tomato bar, passed hors d’oeuvres, cigar bar, corn hole games, as well as a giant “Jenga” game. After the wonderfully catered dinner from “Two Unique,” guests crowded the dance floor for a concert-like reception performance from the native Chicago band “Final Say.” If guests tired of dancing, the lawn games, cigar bar, bon-fire pit and fro-yo dessert truck were open for business all night long. With half of the guests being from the Motor City, we rented a 1967 classic Chevrolet truck for our photo booth from Pat Moran Chevrolet in Detroit. Guests could sit in the front seat and rev the engine, or, pile in the back for pictures taken by Ben + Mindy the entire night.

Words of advice for future brides DON’T STRESS and TRUST the professionals! They know what they’re doing.

Michigan Engagement Session on the Lake

Boat docks and family farms, that’s what engagement dreams are made of. This cute couple went back to the groom’s roots for a love session in the sun, with  M Three Studio in tow. The result is gobs of gorgeous images and love, sweet love. See even more right here in the full gallery.

From M Three Studio PhotographyMike’s family originates from a little map dot in Michigan’s upper peninsula. The sort of place where urbanites summer at their cabins, where little kids learn to fish, count the stars and swing into a lake from a tire swing. For Mike’s father it is home. For Mike, it is his childhood. For Meghan, it is where she fell in love with Mike, as he brought her there for family weekends at his clan’s string of homes on the lake.

So it was only fitting that we visit this picturesque locale for their engagement session. A lonely boat dock in the golden hours, the farm down the lane, and a grove of pine trees at sunset are highlights of this session. It’s filled with all the summer camp nostalgia a summer engagement session should have, and plenty of romance too.

DIY Michigan Farm Wedding

Get ready to have your socks charmed off SMPers, because this DIY barn wedding couldn’t be more adorable it if tried. Beautifully captured by Kelly Sweet Photography, every sweet detail sitting in this gallery will make your wedding-loving heart sing, and you can see why I am gushing here.

From the Bride…Being a wedding photographer myself, I thought of my whole wedding in pictures. I have been obsessed with wedding since I was little and have been reading wedding blogs and magazines since way before I even met Brian. I knew I wanted something rustic and vintage but I also wanted to try not to do the same thing as everyone else. One of the most important things to me in planning our wedding was that everything reflected us and who we are. I knew immediately that I wanted to use my vintage camera collection and thought that centerpieces would be the best way to use them. But I also wanted to include Brian in them so we decided to use potted herbs because he is a cook and is amazing with seasonings. We both love to read and I love old books so we added those as well as teacups that we collected at thrift stores over the many months before the wedding.

We looked at a lot of venues but nothing seemed quite right until we found The Hitching Post. The outdoor location for the ceremony was perfect and I loved the look of the inside of the barn! We also loved that the venue was very open to our use of different vendors.

I am very crafty and a DIY kind of person so I knew that I wanted to make a lot of the stuff. My mom sewed the flower girl dresses, the groom and ring bearers vests, all of the guys’ ties, some of the banners, and personalized monogrammed totes for the bridesmaids. She also made all the cards that we used for our guest book. She is amazing!

I made my bouquet out of a mix of thrift store, vintage, and Hobby Lobby door knobs. It was very heavy but so perfect! I also made my necklace and also necklaces for all the bridesmaids. I handmade Brian’s ring which turned out great. I hand painted all the signs, made all the boutonnieres and corsages, and the banner above our head table. I designed all the stationary including the save the date, invitations, menu, other cards for the tables, and the programs. I really wanted everything to be personal and meaningful.

My dad built the picture display and also collected, grew, and did everything with the herbs. He also painted and stenciled all the little wooden signs that were given to our guests as favors. He also made the awesome wedding sign that we put out by the road. He surprised me with a whole succulent garden on the day we went to decorate. My parents and brother helped assemble the programs and the place cards. I really have a wonderful and helpful family.

Lots of other friends and family helped out too. My matron of honor made all the bridesmaid bouquets; other friends did the flower arranging, several different friends and family members made the treats that were on our dessert table. It was great having desserts that were personalized- my aunt made her peanut butter fudge that I have grown up with, and my grandma made her caramel and chocolate dipped pretzel sticks which she has been making for years. We made sure to include some of our favorite desserts.

I let each of my bridesmaids pick out their own dresses because I wanted them to have something that they liked and that they could wear again. One we even found at a thrift store for $15! Brian has been wearing converse shoes since he was a baby so we knew that we had to have all the guys wear them.

Kelly of Kelly Sweet Photography did our pictures and did a fabulous job! She captured the day perfectly and I love how the pictures turned out!

I seriously could not have asked for a better day. The whole day went so smoothly. It rained a bit in the morning but the weather was absolutely perfect for the rest of the day. It truly was the best day ever and I got to marry my best friend. We both had so much fun and are so thankful to our friends and family who joined us and made the day so amazing. I miss it already!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/70405573 600 338]

From Modern Day Floral and Events… When I first met Katherine and Patrick, they simply had a fleeting vision and palpable excitement for their wedding day. What ensued was months upon months of collaborative brain-storming, selecting perfectly-hued blooms, drooling over textured linens, and meticulously arranging floor plans. Katherine, her mother and I spent over 15 months together planning this special day. Our business relationship quickly grew into a warm friendship, which I will forever cherish.

Katherine and Patrick’s color palette featured soft peach and blush pink, creamy ivories, and lush greenery. We wanted the floral arrangements to have that loose and vintage romance aesthetic. The floral pieces featured fluffy white hydrangea, peach Juliet garden roses, lush ivory and blush peony, ranunculus, local flowering dogwood branches, and playful anemone. Clusters of blush pink hobnail glass, silver mercury glass, and pottery pieces were put together to create an eclectic, yet elegantly styled look to each table.

The most important design aspects for this wedding were the little, but impactful and adorable details. French baguettes with hand calligraphed place cards tied in twine at each place setting. Custom display flags for all of the gourmet cheeses and desserts. Frames with calligraphed menu details at each food station. Bride and groom’s chair signage adorned with draping greenery and lush blooms. A vintage globe for guests to sign, rather than the traditional book. A local Lebanese pastries and sweets station to reflect the bride’s heritage. Multi-layered and textured draping ribbons on the bride’s bouquet handle. A coral flip flop station for guests to get comfortable and dance in… The details were endless and the effect clearly showed. It really is all about making the guest experience truly remarkable!

As a professional, there comes a time in this industry when you find a client that you wish all your clients were like. Katherine and Patrick never lost sight of what was really important – their upcoming marriage, and making their guests’ experience absolutely outstanding. This wedding not only brought us lifelong clients, but also lifelong friends – what a bonus! I can’t wait to watch this couple grow in their marriage, and I hope to be a part of their life for many more years and events to come!

From the Bride… To say our wedding day was pure magic is a complete understatement. Patrick and I are eternally grateful for all of the vendors that truly made our day the most spectacular day of our lives to date. While designing the look and feel of our wedding, our number one goal was to create a night that reflected not only the love that surrounded us, but also accurately expressed our love and appreciation for everyone who was there. We tried to think of each detail of the wedding from the perspective of our guests. We knew we would have the time of our lives, but we also wanted our guests to have the time of their lives.

It was also really important to us to include as many personal touches as possible. Patrick wore my late father’s cuff links, and I wore a diamond and sapphire bracelet that was given to my great grandmother by my great grandfather on their wedding day 85 years earlier. Jenn from Modern Day Floral and I connected right away – especially with our love of the little details, and she and her team immediately set to work on working out every detail of the day and evening.

Picking the venue was a bit challenging as I was really set on having the reception outdoors. The outdoor feel more accurately reflected our vision than any of the indoor venues in Grand Rapids. We decided on a venue that came full circle for us – we met at Blythefield Country Club four years earlier and thought it would be the perfect place for our reception as well. Blythefield has a beautiful outdoor grove and we could just imagine it as the perfect backdrop for our tented wedding reception.

The ceremony was held at the oldest church in Grand Rapids – St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. It was also the same church my grandma and grandpa were married in 58 years earlier. As soon as the ceremony ended, guests arrived at Blythefield and entered the most exquisite fabric draped tent with sparkling chandeliers. At each place setting was an individual baguette that served as a place card. I am in love with all types of paper products and lettering, and I was so excited that Molly Jacques was able to create so many beautiful pieces for our day.

In keeping with our overall goal of showing our love and appreciation for our guests, we wanted them to enjoy several different types of food instead of one plated meal. We had a carving station, a risotto station, and a Lebanese station which is a nod to my heritage. For dessert, guests enjoyed vanilla peach champagne wedding cake and an assortment of desserts that included chocolate eclaires (Patrick’s favorite), mini cherry and pecan pies, and orange madeleines (my favorite).

We danced the night away to an eleven-piece band and enjoyed mini grilled cheese, fries, and root beer floats as the night came to a close. Patrick and I loved planning out each detail with Jenn and look back at our wedding with pure awe and happiness. Our love for each other and the love that surrounded us that day were perfectly captured through our beyond talented photographers and cinematographers. Elegant Ballroom Wedding

You can’t deny it: this wedding is seriously stunning.  It’s the epitome of ballroom elegance with some of the prettiest details you will ever see.  But beyond all of the amazingness (and it IS amazing) is a story of two middle school sweethearts who went from “going out” to tying the knot in the wedding of their dreams.  See every gorgeous moment captured by Coastline-Studios by pressing play.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/71580444 600 338]

From Coastline-Studios… Tanya and Paul had one of the most stunning weddings we’ve ever seen with sequin, textured tablecloths, crystals and linens draped from the ceiling, candlelight, chandeliers, and some the most lush, white and blush flowers on every table… I have to say the girls on our team all got weak at the knees, it was just so beautiful. With help from Beautiful Day Planning, Tanya and Paul had the wedding they had been waiting over 12 years to celebrate (together since middle school, how adorable is that?).

From the Bride… Well, we have been together for a solid 12 years, and have never broken up! We are high school sweethearts and even date back to middle school.  Paulie was a grade older and had told one of our mutual friends he thought my twin sister and I were cute, and wanted to be introduced to me.  We “went out” for a few years on and off in middle school until I got into high school and then we decided to make it “official” and the rest is history.  We went to middle school, high school, away to Western together, he moved to Cincinnati for two years and we did the whole long distance thing.  As the saying goes “Distance makes the heart grow fonder!” I always new Paulie was the one… it sounds so cliche, but it’s true! I knew that some way, some how, when the time was right, we were going to make it work and go for the long hall.  12 years later, we are married!

Northern Michigan Destination Wedding

Exotic locales are always fun, but a change of scenery can also be closer than you think. Take this Chicago couple who decided to hold their nuptials at The Bay Harbor Yacht Club in northern Michigan. The result was a stunning and laid-back getaway for them and their guests. Weber Photography was there to captured some lovely moments, and make sure to catch the video from Epic Motion at the end.

From The Bride…Jay proposed the day he and I moved in together. There were moving boxes everywhere and one of the boxes held the ring. I had no idea until I saw him get down on one knee in the kitchen. Our engagement was a little over a year before our big day.

The vision of our wedding came from 3 places: attending countless friends and families’ weddings, hundreds of visits to StyleMePretty.com  and the help of our talented, professional vendors. Jay and I attended 9 beautiful weddings the year prior to ours and found that our true excitement and passion would be memorable food, a band that could keep the dance floor full all night and a talented team that could capture our special day.

Jay had spent his childhood vacationing in Northern Michigan and we both really found that area special. Although we live in a great city, we wanted a wedding location away from home that was fun, laid-back with a sophisticated vibe, surrounded by nature, water and sunset views. Picking Northern Michigan came naturally after we visited the Bay Harbor Yacht Club and the charming town of Charlevoix. The Bay Harbor Yacht Club view provided ambiance, class and an amazing outside terrace to enjoy cocktail hour and a Northern Michigan sunset. As an extra bonus it was away from a big city, traffic and crowds, which gave it a ‘destination-like’ feel without getting out your passport and still feeling homey.

We made the drive from Chicago on Thursday along with almost all of our guests to take full advantage of the luxury of time and a full weekend with our friends and family. On Friday, the men had a golf tournament while the ladies went to brunch, spa and relaxed at the hotel pool with live music. The wedding party reconnected at the rehearsal dinner that night to prepare for the wedding on Saturday. We were married by our priest who made the 7 hour drive from Chicago. It was very special to have a piece of home with us. Saint Mary’s was very inviting and helpful to allow us to bring our own priest.

The ballroom was a charming, open, bright space. We created a warm, romantic, inviting atmosphere by using whites, grays, metallic, and metals with a slightly rustic and eclectic look. I love mixing mercury glass and metallic with different candelabras heights, bowls and candles.

Our flowers were blush pink and ivory garden roses, with eucalyptus, white anemone, dusty peonies, hydrangeas, white freesia with a touch of accents of greenery.  StyleMePretty provided our inspiration to layer gray linens with lace. Our wedding planner and florist helped us find an amazing, fun, chic sequence linen to use for the highboy tables around the dance floor.

For a special touch we got 8 huge balloons for fun props in our wedding party pictures. The balloons were also a hit with the kids! At the reception we had an interactive candy station and late night food which was a lot of fun. Everyone got to create their own candy goodie bag for their drive home the next day. The wine and food was handpicked and created with local vendors. The catering team and head chief used all local food and produce which we loved supporting local vendors.

We had an amazing wedding weekend and loved every minute of it. Our vendors were truly talented professionals that I would recommend over and over. They made planning from a long distance a piece of (wedding) cake!

Rustic Elegant Wedding at the Forest Dunes Golf Course

I adore this Bride’s approach to planning – she said, “I simply chose elements we liked, and it seemed to work.” And boy did it all work. With the help of Parsonage Events, all of the pretty little pieces fell perfectly into place, so when Lux Light Photography stepped behind the camera to capture it all, magic happened. It leaves us with a gallery too fabulous to miss, and you can see it all here.

From The Bride…For Dane and I, the great thing about dating for 13 years before getting married is that we had subconsciously already started thinking alike and had merged our two styles. You know, that thing that thing that usually happens after you’ve been married awhile…This, along with my event planning background, gave way to swift and painless decision making.

Our fabulous florist and design consultant, Parsonage Events, coined our wedding style as “Rustic Elegance”. Conscious that sometimes following a theme can come off a little too contrived, I simply chose elements that we liked, and it seemed to work. For example, Dane is an avid deer hunter, along with a number of guests at our wedding. Being that our wedding date was during MI bow season, and that the Forest Dunes logo included a deer with antlers, I chose an antler motif for the letterpress invites, by Something Fabulous, and engraved pint glasses (favors). We also chose venison as an appetizer and walleye as one of the dinner options, both indigenous to Northern MI. Inspiration for the ceremony came from our shared love of fishing, kayaking and camping on the Ausable River, as well as an image of the large cross I found on SMP. My design obsession of combining different materials was evident throughout our reception. To maximize space and for cost efficiency, we used both existing wooden tables and rented rounds. A combination of tablecloths, runners and place mats gave the room depth, and all linens were sewn by my mom, as a true labor of love! Soft feminine floral was housed in a mix of clear and colored vintage glass and pewter pedestal bowls; and they were balanced by the dark wood and masculinity of the room. Each setting included a vintage metal napkin ring, which I collected for months before the big day. Because we love a good bonfire, and Forest Dunes has a great bonfire pit on their back patio, we had to include smores. True to our childhood, the sticks had to be found in the woods and whittled down (thanks to my brother, Luke)! Inspiration for the traditional cake from Bella e Dolce, came from the lace detail of my dress. Proud and excited by our new monogram, seen on the cake, I painted the large wooden letters that hung from the loft and my mom surprised us by having it embroidered on the head table runner, which we now use in our home. Afterwards, many of our guests commented that they could really “see Dane and Emily” in each of the special touches of that day. To us, this meant success!

For love of early to mid 20th century fashion, I was drawn to the Ivy and Aster Collette gown, and the Elizabeth pumps by Emmy Shoes. A pearl necklace and bracelet were passed down to me by great grandmothers on both my mom and dad’s side. The costume broach seen on my bouquet was once Dane’s great aunt’s, accompanied by a hankie that was tatted by yet another of my great grandmothers. The satin clutch I used was made by my mom, using fabric from my grandmother’s wedding dress. Bridesmaids chose their own dress and color, which happened to be from both JCrew and Ann Taylor, necklaces by JCrew and Bagley Mischka pumps. Guys suits were custom Joseph Abboud from Nordstrom and sage trout ties from Buffalo Jackson.

Trouvaille Workshop Wedding Inspiration

M’dears, what you’re about to feast your wedding-loving eyes on is complete gorgeousness. And of course, it would be coming from our darling friend Rhiannon of Hey Gorgeous Events. Her recent Trouvaille Workshop was an explosion of pretty to say the least… diving into every aspect of the wedding planning industry from biz advice and creating client relationships to styling, design & florals, it’s packed with more lovely than you can dream up, captured by Bradley James. And the best part? She’s hosting another this fall! See all the details below—if you can ever get through the loveliness!

From Rhiannon of Hey Gorgeous EventsIn my nearly five years of business as the owner of Hey Gorgeous Events, I’ve found that conferences and workshops are some of the best ways to learn and network with colleagues and vendors. Early last year, I was searching around for a conference to attend here in the Midwest because most of the ones I’ve attended (and loved) involve a lot of travel. I had a list of three things I was looking for in my dream workshop and those things included; hands on learning and advice from industry professionals I could take home and apply to my business, an engaging and stylized environment where I could feel taken care of and even be treated to little gifts and offerings, and lastly I wanted more than anything a place where I could find intimacy with other like minded pro’s and a sense of community that felt genuine. When I couldn’t find what I was searching for I decided the workshop I so craved was something I would have to (and really wanted to!) create for OTHERS. This was my opportunity to give back. And with that the Trouvaille Workshop was born.

The workshop consisted of three content filled days designed to focus on the back and front end of a multi-faceted wedding planning and design business. From pricing strategies and learning to make a profit in this industry, legal advice and trademarks, and creating lasting relationships with your vendors and working as a team, notable speakers flew in from all over the US to touch on these subjects. Attendees were also able to focus on the front end of their business (and more creative side of their craft) with hands on styling, design, and floral sessions that weren’t just about the details but about the sourcing, planning, renting, designing and pricing of these items. On top of that the intimate group of nearly 30 attendees and speakers facilitated many amazing friendships and connections made amongst the plated meals, themed dinners, sweet gifts from some remarkable small businesses and exercises and opportunities infused to Trouvaille to drive home what I think we all need more of; love for not only what we do but for one another. It was a three day adventure that changed the way I view learning and inspiring in this industry, and one I hope I can host again and again for years to come.

*Please note many of the photos of floral arrangements held by the attendees are of their own creations!

The October Trouvaille Workshop 2.0 is set to offer the same hands on learning and intimate environment as the last with a slight twist on the speakers attending and the content being shared. It promises to be as wonderful and inspiring as the last. I can’t wait to meet the 30 new (and some returning!) attendees from all over the country who feel as passionate as I do about learning to better serve our deserving clients, and supporting and raising one another other up as powerful and purposeful business women. Registration for tickets can be found here. I will gladly extend the early bird rate to June 9th so SMP readers may have the chance to snag a spot! Check out the workshop hashtag on Instagram #trouvailleworkshop

From Laurie Bailey… Meredith and Oren were introduced three years ago, by close friends and family. Despite nearly 3,000 miles of distance between them (Meredith was based in LA; Oren was in NY), Meredith and Oren soon realized they shared not only a handful of close people in their lives, but they had so much more in common. Soon after they began talking, Oren pulled at Meredith’s heart strings when instead of sending a typical gift such as flowers, Oren sent a gift basket to Meredith’s family’s two Portuguese Water Dogs. He knew the way to her heart. A month after their phone conversations began, Meredith and Oren finally met in LA, and have been inseparable ever since. Meredith moved to NY a year later, and an engagement shortly followed.

It only seemed fitting for two people who were introduced by friends and family to celebrate their wedding at home in an intimate outdoor wedding. The wedding took place at Meredith’s parent’s home, outdoors in the gardens.

Guests made their way from the cocktail hour held on a custom built clear floor above the pool through an archway of trees that led to the ceremony site. The ceremony was held under a traditional Jewish chuppah, a canopy which symbolizes the home the couple will build together. The chuppah was adorned with orchids, roses, and greenery and blended in with the natural surroundings. The reception was held at the other end of the garden under a tent with open sides, which allowed the beauty of the garden to be a part of the wedding.

From the ceiling, eclectic chandeliers created a warm light over tables decorated with antique silver vases and candelabras. Little touches of detail from the monogrammed napkin rings, to the silver rimmed glasses, to the imported French chargers brought together the space which was filled with neutral colored fabrics and flowers, and most importantly lots of love. Songs played by Party on the Moon filled the air and Oren’s special performance on the drums capped off a magical night.

Traditional Elegance at The Royal Park Hotel

This stunning Bride’s handsome Groom had his heart set on a southern soiree, but when plans changed, and they decided to host it closer to their now home – she decided she would bring that southern charm into their traditional ballroom wedding. So with the help of Two Foot Creative and Emerald City Designs, she brought the outdoors in, making all parties (including us) beyond happy. See all the pretty snapped up by The Shooting Gallery here.

From the Bride…I am so excited to finally share my wedding with you; even though it was seven months ago (time flies), I have decided I want to share it with you because I think it has some beautiful elements that other brides and brides-to-be will enjoy! I know when I was researching and trying to find my own bridal style, I loved seeing real weddings that were lovely and human.

My husband is from Savannah, Georgia and when we first got engaged, we were thinking we would have our wedding in Savannah or Hilton Head. I loved the idea of a Southern wedding with all the fixings and Spanish moss covered trees. After going to look at venues down there, I decided living in Michigan and planning a Southern wedding would be too difficult. I am hands on and did I mention, I am a wedding planner? So yes, I knew myself well enough and what I wanted so we brought our wedding back up to the mitten. My husband, Nick, was a little disappointed; I had raised his hopes and then changed my mind. The next best thing I could do was to bring some of the Southern Charm to Michigan! Even though we had a ballroom wedding, we wanted to basically bring the outdoors, INDOORS without breaking the bank. From that point on, I referred to our wedding theme as ‘Burlap & Bling’ when anyone asked. The burlap brought in the Southern charm and the bling made it slightly more formal since it was still in a ballroom in a fancy hotel.

Our invitations set the initial tone for our guests. They were cream with dark brown ink and had a burlap wrap. We incorporated the same burlap wrap and monogram throughout our entire event for consistency. I wanted to use natural and neutral colors in the ceremony space. We had mahogany chiavari chairs, blooming branches, hanging crystals and lots of natural light. The Conservatory was the perfect space to say our vows. The room is made of Italian glass with an Italian glass chandelier. It was early May and the trees had just bloomed outside, giving us an amazing backdrop.

For our reception, I wanted guests to feel like they were transported outside and down South! We had three different tables with various levels of candles, mason jars, hanging candles, burlap, crystals, blooming branches, green branches and hanging lights. I wanted the tall centerpieces to almost feel like trees. My dream was to have cafe lights hanging over the dance floor and the design team made that happen! Half the tables had a floral appliqué linen that could not have been more lovely. I also knew I wanted round menus to go beneath the crystal beaded charger plates. It was one of my favorite details. I had a burlap banner made for our custom cake table. We didn’t have cake passed…there were four flavors and I wanted guests to be able to choose the flavor of their choice. I also had a grooms cake for Nick; he’s a huge soccer fan and his team is in England. Our baker made him a custom cake we displayed on that table. Another huge part of our reception was our band. I had them learn a few of Nick’s favorite songs to surprise him. He got on stage and sang with the bad, it was awesome! At the end of the night, we went outside to do a few shots with sparklers. The Royal Park Hotel has this gorgeous patio on the river with strands of cafe lights above. As soon as it was dark enough, we headed out there with our photographers and videographer to take a few shots. These were probably some of the best photos we have and I get so many compliments on them.

The Shoes: my shoes were my one accessory most people asked about. I knew I wanted something sparkly and fun, but just couldn’t find the right shoe. Through lots of searching, I found these crystal Christian Louboutin’s. Unfortunately, they were unavailable. I kept searching and found a woman who wanted to same pair for her wedding, but decided she could make them. I offered to pay her to make mine and she happily agreed! I bought a pair of Louboutin’s and had them shipped to her in California. There, she HAND placed each and every crystal. She would send me photos of her progress and then the completed project. I was not only in awe, but had so much respect for her patience and talent. She then sent shoes back to me with extra crystals, a tube of glue in a syringe and a note. The entire process was seamless and worth every penny!
