PREP

Start by exfoliating your lips! I love a good sugar scrub to smooth our flakey and chapped lips. Sara Happ makes an all-natural scrub. You can also DIY it.

Moisturize

I love Homeoplasmine, used by all runway makeup artists. It’s great on cuticles too. Beautycounter also makes a great, all-natural calendula lipbalm that I love to use on photoshoots.

Application

Grab that lip color and apply! The color you choose depends on you. You could go with a bright coral, or a deep wine, as we did for this shoot, or you could do a beautiful red, or fuchsia. This is really up to you and your personality, so play away! If you are having someone else do your makeup, the trial you schedule with your makeup artist will be the time you experiment with colors. Make sure you let you’re her know beforehand that you want to do a bold lip for your wedding day and that you want to find a lip color during your trial with him. For our shoot, we used Korres #45 Coral Lipstick & MAC Rebel

Precision

You can either use a lip brush for a more precise application, especially useful for darker colors, or you can apply straight from the tube, or with your finger. If you’re going to use a lip brush, you will be able to apply the color in layers, so that if you want a more muted, or stained effect of the color, you can do so this way. If you want maximum impact, keep applying the color in layers until you get the desired boldness you were intending on.

If you do end up getting a little lipstick outside of the lip line, you can smudge away with a Q-tip and then apply a little concealer over top of the area to erase out any color. This is especially helpful when applying darker colors. I like a travel lipbrush so that you can stash it in your purse for touchups

LIPLINER

After you’re done applying your lip color, you will want to seal in the color so that it doesn’t bleed. I like to apply lip liner after lipstick because it keeps the look more fresh and not overly “done” looking. Plus, it does what it needs to do: seal in the color from bleeding and crisp up the lip line for a more polished effect. Again, if you end up going outside of your lip line, just smudge away with a Q-tip and apply a bit of concealer with a brush to wipe away any traces of a mistake. For this shoot we used Makeup Forever’s Lipliner in Coral & MAC’s Lip liner in Vino.

GET THE LOOK

And there you have it! A fresh take on wedding makeup without that much hassle. A few notes: I tend to avoid lip gloss on top of a bold lip because I feel that it can look to “done.” But with makeup and personality there are no rules, so if you want to top your look off with a bit of gloss, I say the more power to you. Also, I tend to avoid the step of blotting and powdering and then reapplying lip color for the same reason- it can start to look heavy and dated. If you’re concerned about longevity, you can apply a sealer on top of your lipstick. Most likely than not, you will have to reapply your lips at least once throughout the night.
